The Fervor Over Favre

What's the Deal with Favre?

I’ll tell you what the deal is about Favre… Just like JFK, he inspired, excited and engaged anyone and everyone who watched him. He was like a monstrous kid out on the field; if he laughed you laughed, if he cried you just wanted to grab him and give him a big old bear hug. He brought something to Green Bay that it hadn’t seen in a long time, besides the Super Bowl, he brought the pure spirit of enthusiasm and winning. Even the teams and players he defeated couldn’t hold a grudge against this charismatic leader of American football. No one could touch him and he inspired new dedication to the Pack and drew new fans through his spirit and vitality.

That is what makes the current situation even more unbearable. The white knight has fallen from grace, through his actions and indecision he has been reduced to a laughing-stock; the greatest flip-flopper since John Kerry. Green Bay fans don’t want to hear about the latest drama about Favre because it just means he is moving further and further from what we wanted to remember him for; his great team spirit, his enthusiasm and his charm. We cringe, plug our ears and scream, “LALALALALALALALALA,” every time his name is announced on sports radio; we just don’t want to know.

Of course we all understand what it is he really wants from the latest fiasco. He wants revenge, pure and simple; revenge against a management team that grew tired of his indecision and expectations of last-minute team restructuring, revenge for being denied carte blanche as the one-and-only Great Brett Favre. Do Packer fans deny his greatness? Absolutely not, we practically worshipped the guy as an amazing athlete and as a man who overcame personal hardship and tragedy while allowing us to see him at his most vulnerable.

The problem is that it isn’t from management that retribution is being paid; it is through the Green Bay fans. Management doesn’t get the point, they don’t care and they aren’t the ones who are getting hurt by the Favre headlines appearing along side Green Bay’s arch-nemesis, the Vikings. It’s the fans that are paying the price. Everyone who ever loved Brett-the-player, Brett-the-husband, Brett-the-son knows how Favre felt when Green Bay said they couldn’t revoke their promise to Rodgers.

Though we longed for the good-old-days of Favre we all knew there had to be a conclusion. Any team who wants to construct a Super Bowl roster can't support year after year of retirement announcements followed by just-in-the-nick-of-time come-backs. The Pack needed to focus on improving as a team, not on how to restructure the team once Favre decided he wanted to come back…again.

Players like Favre come once in a lifetime and when they do it's hard to let them go. However we also know that there is a time when a man, no matter how impressive, has outlived his ability to fill his own shoes. Age is something that catches up to all of us, the smallest and the greatest...even the great Brett Favre. We've seen the stats; we tried to deny it but we know, we understand...

We love you Favre, we always will and no matter what you choose to do with the rest of your professional career, you definitely left us with a lot of wonderful memories. You’re breaking our hearts with the current outbreak of scandalous news but you gotta do what you gotta do, buddy. You will always be the Great Favre to us…we are the BEST fans in football and we are the most forgiving, but we aren’t the only ones watching.

RayneMJ--I'm a Packers' fan in Kansas. I was upset when Farve went to the Jets, but it was still fun watching him play. You're correct--he has crossed the line now going to the Vikes. Going to the Bears would be the only thing worse. Still, it will be difficult for me to root against him. Against the Vikes, until the day I die, but against Farve, well, I don't know if I can do it. Rodgers has the potential to be great, so we did ok there. It will be an interesting year.
