Remember Blondie?
The first rap song to gain real popularity is "Rapture" by Blondie. It was released in January 1981. It was the second release of their 1980 Album Autoamerican.
It did reach #1 on Billboard Hot 100.
This song was not the first rap song ever it is the first one reach the top 100 on the charts. There were several predecessors but "Rapture" was definitely the first to reach the holy grail of #1.
Many other artist have remixed this song and it has been released in several different versions.
The first official remix was in 1988 in "Once More Into the Beach" then again in 1994 with "The Platinum Collection, Beautiful" and "Remix Remade Remodel".
Several other artist have sampled this song as well.

Where do you get your info from denalaurens? "Rapture" wasn't even close to being the first rap song. Rap music was created in the Bronx in 1974 by DJ Kool Herc. Though "Rapture" is the first rap song to reach #1 on the billboard charts, "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang was the first rap song to be played on the radio, 2 years earlier, in 1979. Debbie Harry and Chris Stein have both stated that they first learned about rap music and hip hop culture from their good friend and hip hop pioneer, Fab Five Freddy. This is why in "Rapture" she says, "Fab Five Freddy told me everybody's fly, dj spinning I said "my my". She's talking about her introduction to rap music. "Rapture" was definitely influential because it expanded rap beyond the inner city to mainstream america. It is NOT, however, where rap music evolved from. IT evolved from rap music, which had already existed for years.

Rapture was not just the first rap song to be recorded or hit #1. It was THE first rap song, period. Rap music (rapping) evolved from Rapture.
