For the millions of people who are suffering from tinnitus, a tinnitus treatment is very important. But it is also equally important to know what could possibly be causing such condition. There are several medical problems which may cause it but of course there are the so called four main causes of tinnitus.
Let us get to know the four main causes of tinnitus and find out which one could possibly be causing our tinnitus. This information not only gives those who have tinnitus the idea what could be causing tinnitus, but it can also serve as a warning to those who do not have it and would want to avoid it:
1. Noise-induced cochlear damage
Constant exposure to loud noise is among the most common cause of ear ringing. It can either result from too much listening to loud music from Ipods or stereos or exposure to noise from heavy equipments such as jackhammers, compactors and drills. As the ears get exposed to loud noise, the tiny hair cells which are located in our cochlea eventually get damaged. These hair cells are responsible for transmitting the sound that we hear to our brain. When they become damaged, we begin to fail hearing sound either temporarily or permanently.
2. Stress or Trauma
Stress is one of the popular aggravators of tinnitus. It is but natural for a person with a ringing in ears to experience stress as they continuously hear the nagging noise. But too much stress is also not healthy as it can just trigger the ear ringing more, making it much louder and eventually creating a nonstop cycle.
3. Sinusitis or Allergies
Sinusitis and allergies can cause tinnitus basically because of the presence of thickened mucous in the middle ears. This can result to pressure in the middle ear and thus causing ear infections and tinnitus. The thickening may also be a side effect of antibiotics and antihistamines which are usually used by sufferers of sinusitis.
4. Meniere’s Disease
Meniere’s disease happens to be one of those health problems that commonly cause tinnitus. Apart from the ringing in the ears, a patient also experiences vertigo, nausea and a feeling of aural fullness. Frequent attacks of vertigo usually cause the tinnitus.
With the four main causes of tinnitus carefully evaluated, every person can now fully protect themselves from getting tinnitus, while those who have it can find the best treatment that will work for them. I have lived with tinnitus for twenty something years. Mine was initially caused by loud music played through those huge, padded earphones of the seventies and shooting, especially shotguns.
Today it increases with stress so stress management is a big one. It seems to cancel out certain tones; for instance I can hardly hear my daughter talking unless she raises her voice but I can hear another person whisper ... so I know I am not deaf!
