The Glass half full

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Cried Chicken Little and as we all know the sky never fell and Chicken Little went down in history as an annoying piece of foul only to be redeemed many years later born again “Kentucky Fried”!

You know as we look back over the centuries we have had one “Grapes of wrath” experience after another and through it all man has survived…So some of us are a little short of the good old Franklin or Washington, being broke is only tempory as against poverty being a state of mind.

The latest buzz word of 2009 would have to be rescission, but I tend to look at it as a time of new growth and creativity in all areas of our lives. It’s a time to see the glass half full and to flex our metal and soar to new heights and face fears that have been dogging us for so long and put them to death where they belong.

Can you imagine if Winston Churchill in Britain’s darkest hour threw in the towel and sat in the corner resigned to his bowl of “Sour kraut” instead of crying never, never, never Quit? If Stonewall Jackson had never turned while in full retreat and faced the “Union Army” head on. If Rosa parks never sat in the front of the bus or drank from a white`s only fountain.

If Martin Luther king JNR had never marched on Washington igniting the fire of true civil rights in America (Obama has been a wonderful fruit of that seed) or for that matter the great reformer Martin Luther in Germany had not nailed his revelation of true freedom in God onto the door of the Catholic Church. If Christopher Columbus believed everything the critics said and never set sail on the winds of faith to the Americas. If Nelson Mandela never gave up his freedom for his country and in the end he became its leader. If Gandhi never humbled himself before his God and by peaceful protest drove out an empire without firing a shot.

And Finally!!!Robert the Bruce the last great King of Scotland lay hiding in a cave in the highlands of his beloved country. He had been defeated by the English Army for the sixth time and was morally and mentally drained of all hope and soon possibly life it’s self. As he lay on the floor of his discontent he noticed a small spider trying to swing across from one side of the cave to the other in the hope of building a web. The spider tried once, twice, three and so on each time failing but never giving up until on the Seventh attempt he made it. Robert took this as a sign from God and left that Cave a changed man and one with his maker. He raised up another Scottish Army and sent England packing.

So as a friend of mine once said as we stopped at a red light on the way to work “Look Michael! we are first in line!!! So how do you look at your glass?

Your panoramic view of history and ready reference to one hero of humanity after the next makes a delightful read. The sin is not in falling down but in failing to get up. cheers,

Thanks for the reminder, Mike...Great Hub....too bad most folks seem to think of a glass as half filled by the government....

I have always wondered why Churchill was cast aside at the end of WWII after doing a brilliant job for England and the world during it.

I like the phrase, the glass is too big.

Hi Issues:0)

Very Good point...here in the states they get looked after for life...but when thacther left her seat she got nothing as did Churchill no retirment etc...very unfair.

They just seem to drop out of the public eye...

mikeq107,

I agree, it was very unfair.

It is probably an example of "NO Good Deed Goes Unpunished"

Great hub, Mike. You're right. It's all a matter of mindset. We can either look the world's woes as an opportunity to change for the better or mope around and feel sorry for ourselves. For some of us, the situation reminds me of an old song I heard on the jukebox last night at the pizza parlour. The song was "Me and Bobby Megee. One phrase said "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. Well alot of us have freedom today to change our lives for the better. Hope you and Cynthia are doing well. Take care, Mike.

Mike...this certainly is a great hub. We used to read that ' spider' story in the school and I think it'll carry that spine-chilling effect, inspiration and motivation for all times to come. Thumbs up.

Hi issues:0)

Imagine if he had had an affair, they would have never stooped talking about him and he would probably have been reelected.

Hi Jen :0)

Great comments ...Bobby megee, forgotten all about that song ,great example! You know the songs from that Era had some thought and depth to them like the town criers and bards of old! Cynthia loves her new job and God is leading me to write more as it is my natural desire .....God bless you Jen in all you do:):)

Thank you! Thank you! I'm surrounded by doomsayers and it is driving me nuts. I like to look at things differently. The bad economy is beyond my control. What can I do? See it as a challenge to be met.

Hi Mike, nice to meet you somewhat too late. But there is never too late. There is only a purpose. I rely with you many ways especially I am a biblical believer but not religious. Have a Happy Resurrection Day, to you Mike and your lady.

I love the story about Robert the Bruce, but I love what your friend said better! Sometimes, when I am frustrated with traffic, and get stopped by a light, I think, "Oh good, open road!" I'm going to have to try the "first in line" comment on my daughter one day. She will like that! BTW--I really enjoyed this hub :D
