Taking excellent photos requires creativity sometimes, and that can include positioning your camera in ways besides the standard frontal face-level shot. What if you could hang your camera from that banister over there, or balance it down on those rocks? Now you can make your camera as versatile as you are.

The Gorillapod takes the standard tripod one step further. It does have three legs, and will stabilize your camera, but the multi-jointed legs can be used to grip and hang your camera as well. It looks like an insect robot from a sci-fi movie.

Each leg has 30 ball and socket joints, giving it great flexibility and grip. Each ball is rimmed in rubber, so that it will grab hold tightly and securely. You can wrap the legs around a railing, a tree branch or a flag pole. And though the Gorillapod is designed for grappling, the rubber feet make is very stable as a typical stand-up tripod too.

The original Gorillapod is designed for a typical digital camera, but now also comes in larger models for SLR cameras and even ones with large zoom attachments. The SLR-ZOOM model can hold up to 6 pounds and still stay steady. Cameras attach with a handy snap clip, that can stay on your camera via the usual little tripod screw hole.

The small (original) Gorillapod is only around $22, and comes in 6 different colours in case you want to coordinate your photo equipment. The larger models are $40 and $55 each. You can also buy extra clips so you can quickly swap one camera for another with the tripod.

And for the ecologically-minded out there, 1% of all sales go to an environmental charity and you can even order your Gorillapod without any packaging to save on paper and plastic waste. That's a novel idea.

So if you're up to trying some new angles on your photo taking, you might want to think about getting a Gorillapod tripod. It looks like it would give you a whole new outlook on your photography.

I've never seen this product before - brilliant idea! Traditional tripods can be fiddly to set up and can only be used on a reasonably horizontal surface.

Hello Terri,

Thanks for the great review of Gorillapod. I ran across your article the other day and remembered seeing them displayed in a local photo supplies chain store. After readi8ng your piece, I went out today and bought one. Even the store clerks didn't know how the Gorillapod "worked". So they were delighted when I showed them. I got mine for half price as a "thank you" from the store.

Keep up the good work.
