Dr. Dwight Lundell, a thoracic surgeon and co-author Lois Smithers recently wrote a book entitled, The Great Cholesterol Lie. This book provides a road map to understanding the problems associated with treatment and management of cholesterol, the alleged culprit behind heart disease. With over 25% of the population taking statin medications, understanding the preventative approaches that can be used to control the spread of heart disease is absolutely necessary and The Great Cholesterol Lie does just that.

Management of heart disease has up until recently relied heavily on a combination of expensive surgery and pharmaceutical drugs. In fact, just so you know, the statin drug Lipitor, manufactured by Pfizer and used to block the biosynthesis of cholesterol in the body, made close to $13 billion last year! Well that is wonderful for the pharmaceutical company, but how do patients fair and are there alternative preventative and treatment strategies available?

In their book, The Great Cholesterol Lie, Dr Lundell and Lois Smithers, take readers through a journey of scientific and medical information, in an easy to read manner by explaining

1. How cholesterol came to be known as the main threat in heart disease, linking "The Framingham Study" which began in 1948 with the problem.

2. Based on his over 5000 open heart surgeries why understanding inflammatory processes can minimize the threat of heart disease and

3. Most important what alternative approaches there are that can minimize, prevent and even cure heart disease.

They go on to further show that inflammation is not only responsible for heart disease, but impacts many other illnesses, including alzheimers, depression and cancer!

By focusing on increasing awareness about diet, omega 3 supplements and inflammation, Dr. Lundell and Lois Smithers describe the steps to follow which can lead to a healthier life style.

While going through the book, probably one of the best lines I came across was spun out of the well known credit card commercial. It went like this - "Bypass surgery - $83,919. Cardiac Cath with Stent - $63,096. Statins and other meds - $250 per month. Getting healthy and staying healthy - priceless"

The official launch of the downloadable book is set for March 26th, but you shouldn't wait to get your copy now. The Great Cholesterol Lie.
