The Great Commission Gospel Of Matt Part 3
58Matt 28:18-20
Matt 28:18,19
[18]And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. All Power A-L-L, all of it, not 33.333% of it, not 1/2 of it, not 99.999% of it, ALL OF IT, is given to him in heaven and earth. Not just in earth but in heaven also. This tells me that Jesus Christ has All The POWER. There's nobody else, if there is somebody else they're not to be regarded, as they don't have any power. J.C is saying that He has it ALL. And because he's got it all, he say's in verse [19] Go ye therefore, (what does he mean therefore) therefore because I have all power (proclaimation) and teach all nations, baptizing them in THE NAME, (remember Jesus has all the power). One name covers of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. First and foremost Father isn't a name, it's a title, Holy Ghost isn't a name it's a title, Son is not a name, Everybody knows that son is not a name, it's a title. There is a name that you are to baptize in that covers these three titles, Jesus said I'm the one with all the power, so it would be logical to conclude that the name that covers these three titles is the name with all the power, JESUS. (That's all fine and good, and we can make all the speculation that we want but lets get some more insight into this before we jump to any hasty conclusions). More importantly what did his Apostles (you know, these men that he heaped up around himself for 3.5 years) do in regard to this command. Peter has the keys to the kingdom of heaven, so what did he preach about this. Remember you didn't get to ask Christ what he meant by the things he spoke, the Apostles did.
[20]Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. To observe means to obey. Some people say "well I believe and that's enough" No Way, Sorry Charlie. What makes you special, or any different than these men that walked with him for 3.5 years. The only thing that sets us apart from the people that lived 2000 years ago is that today we have everything at the click of a button, we have this lazy misconception that the things that were necessary for salvation then, aren't necessary today, they don't apply to us. If this is you I gotta tell ya, you are sadly mistaken, stop lying to yourself. IT ISN'T GOING TO CHANGE. God is the same today, yesterday and forever more. He and his word are inseparable, so as he does not change, neither does his word. Also, the Lord isn't going to say something that doesn't mean anything when it's the last thing he's going to speak for just about 2,000 years. You can rest assured that whatever he's saying here (he's told them before), is of the utmost importance. Therefore these people in this church world today that want to say that baptism isn't necessary are just plain silly. They're not rightly dividing the word.
Before we move on to the next account of the great commission I would like to flip over to Isaiah 9:6 just to get some context to the terminology that is being used in this verse (Matt 28:18-20)
Isaiah 9:6
[6]For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
This is a prophecy about the birth of Jesus Christ. [6]For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: What does this mean? Government means POWER, exusia (authority) upon his shoulder means he's bearing it, He's the one with the power. Remember Jesus said in Matt 28:18, all power is given to me in heaven and in earth. How did it get there, by the prophecy of the word, that's how. Jesus said all things must be fulfilled. It was prophesied in the word/scripture that he would have this power. The government shall be upon his shoulder, AND HIS NAME, what is his name, what is the name of this prophesied child, "JESUS" his name (Jesus) shall be called Wonderful, Counsellour, The Mighty God, (look at this next title) The Everlasting Father. Therefore what Matt 28:19 is talking about is the fulfillment of this prophecy. Jesus said "Baptize in the name". My name, all power is given unto me, I've got the government on my shoulder. The name of the Father, well the name of the father here of course is the child Jesus. The counsellour is the Holy Ghost, this is what counsels us, so Matt 28:19 is not a formula, it is simply a commandment to go and do something (baptize) in the name of these titles of God which have been mentioned in the bible before, it is a prophecy being fulfilled.
At this time I would like to use these verses to prove another point. I often hear people say that the bible is a complete contradiction unto itself. I can understand how someone who has a total lack of knowledge concerning the things of God would think such a thing. This is however not the case.
Here is an example: Matt 28:18 Here we have Jesus in view, and he's telling his apostles that all power is His. Matt 6:9-13 Here we have Jesus in view teaching them how to pray. This prayer is brought to conclude with these words "For thine (meaning yours, he's referring to the Father) is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen". Now verses [14]-[15] conclude that if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. If you forgive not, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive you. Here Jesus is stating that the Father which is in heaven has not only the power, but also the kingdom and the glory. He also states that the Father is going to be the one that judges us. Wait a minute, I thought Jesus was the one that was going to judge. Isn't he the one that sits on the mercy seat. (there are many such verses throughout the bible that seem to contradict one another, this is however not the case).
Sounds like a contradiction, doesn't it? So who has the power, who's going to be the judge. Well, as we saw earlier in the book of John, as Jesus is speaking with Nicodemus he tells him that no man has ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the son of man which is in heaven. Again what Jesus is telling Nicodemus is that he came down from heaven, not as the son, rather as the spirit ( the Father is a spirit) and he (father) manifest himself in the flesh (Son) The Father and the son are one in the same. Jesus is God. He's telling Nicodemus right here that he is in heaven, Obviously he's not in heaven as the son of man, rather as the Spirit. Isaiah 9:6 also very blatantly states that Jesus is the Everlasting Father, as well as the Son. This is why Isaiah states that Jesus is the Almighty God.
The bottom line is this. There are to many unanswered questions that a triune God, or a trinity (3 gods in 1, or whatever they say he is) cannot satisfy. I was a trinitarian for a long time, with many unanswered questions. The best that my teachers/pastors could do for me was to tell me (very frustrated and abruptly I might add) that at some point I had to let go of all of the questions that I had and just put my faith in God. I'll tell you what, every question I ever had for these phony teachers/liars (the Bible refers to them as ravening wolves in sheep's clothing) was valid and of the word itself. I now realize that to answer these questions correctly would be to deny the very triune God in which they serve. I'm not saying that they deliberately lied to me. Somewhere along the way they were given a false interpretation of the word, and they continued the cycle. They were sincere about what it was that they were/are teaching, the only problem is that they are sincerely wrong. The bottom line is this, Jesus is God!
