The Great Divide in American Politics

E Pluribus Unum
The motto chosen in 1776 and adopted by Congress in 1782 was 'E Pluribus Unum'. It means 'out of many, one'. It was long considered a de facto motto until the United States Congress passed H.J. Resolution 396 adopting 'In God We Trust' as the nations official motto in 1956.

E Pluribus Unum, speaks directly of the many peoples who over time and even today make up this great Nation. Our melting pot of various races, ethnicities, religions, idealogies and cultures have, in the past, come together as one nation. But today, September 11th, 2009 there is no unity. This anniversary of the traggedy of 9/11 is a reminder to me of the nation coming together in one heart and one mind, and it saddens me immensely to see the United States so divided politically today, 8 short years later.
I know this division has not happened overnight. It has been building and evolving over a long period of time. Unfortunately I see no end in sight. There is no middle gound, there is no bi-partisanship, and no compromise. The great divide in American politics grows wider by the day and I do not see how we can maintain our country's sovereignty with such unwillingness to do what is right and good and in the best interest of the people, as varied as they are, of this once unified nation. Truth and transparency have fallen by the wayside. Fairness and balance are as absent as the historical heart of this country.

You said it! I am sad for the next generation, and feel helpless in many ways. What will it take to unite us again? A short but thought provoking hub.
Good Hub RS, seems like just the other day those Towers fell, 8 years, sad.
We have taken a giant step backwards since September 11th, and at this juncture I don't see things improving. Our elected officials have completely forgotten the true meaning of representation. I think My Grandmother's motto says it all. Everything in moderation nothing to excess. This is an administration built upon excesses of power.
Hopefully with time, things will change for the better.
It seems a movement is underway favoring Marxism in America, apparently having learned nothing from the history of the USSR. This is more than sad; it is tragic.
Thank you for your fine Hub. I agree with you. We are split.
I actually like this hub. I work with a company that employees over seven hundred souls within my city alone. The neighbor across from me works at the same company but in another department.
I asked her a rhetorical question this evening; actually two, 1) If you were president what would you do with dead-beat adults and secondly what we could do differently in terms of housing violent criminals.
She went off on this thing about "bad seed." Furthermore, she stated that if a thief is killed in the process of an attempted robbery -- oh well. She said that the same person if not taken out then would be the same person that would knock her over the head for the seven dollars in her purse. She seems to be against using taxpayer dollars to house violent criminals she said we should take them out to sea and drop them overboard.
I guess she has a point. We also discussed what the nation should do about those who've served time and are actually looking to work. We were both in agreement on this one -- give them work.
I agree with you. If we were to sit down at a table regardless of party lines we would accomplish a great deal more. I personally still think the left should have to eat "America's Medicare Part D Donut Hole." Working folk should nOT have to and neither should our elders for God's sake. Love you guys.
thank you for all the comments.

I certainly haven't forgotten that day and nor will I ever. I actually visited the WTC six months prior to 9/11. My aunt also came with us, as she was visiting from Melbourne, Australia. Thanks, rsmallory.
