The Great Tribulation
Most people don't like to think of the great tribulation because of all the pain and suffering which will take place. Some believe that those who believe in Jesus will be raptured out of this world before the tribulation begins. It is a comforting thought, but the more I study the subject the more I am convinced that we will all be here for the great tribulation.
The Book of Revelation is a hard to understand book with a lot of symbolic language. It speaks of candlesticks, stars, waters, dragons, and many beasts and the image of the beast. There is no literal beast with ten horns, or a literal whore which sits upon many waters. This is all symbolic language.
But many take Revelation 13:11-18 literally where it talks about a beast whose number is 666. Everyone will be forced to receive his mark—either his name or his number on the right hand or on the forehead. Those who refuse to take the mark will not be able to buy or sell, and those who will not worship the beast will be killed.
This is what most people think of when they think of the great tribulation. Even unbelievers are familiar with the number 666 and its association with satan. Because of this it makes me wonder whether it will be a literal mark or number that people will be forced to take.
Perhaps it is meant to be taken literally, but I believe the mark of the beast is a symbolic language and goes much further than just a name or number being put on the hand or forehead.
As for those being killed for not worshipping the beast, I can see it happening literally because Christians have been persecuted and killed since the first family walked upon this earth and is still going on today.
Jesus and His disciples (all except John, who wrote Revelation) were martyred and faced horrible deaths. If God did not spare them, why would He choose to spare anyone during the great tribulation by rapturing them into heaven?

God Has Not Appointed Us To Wrath
Some believe the great tribulation is the time when God will pour out His wrath upon the earth. I believe God will find a way to protect his people from His wrath during the tribulation, or pour it out after the tribulation, because He has not appointed His people to wrath.
When reading through the Old Testament, we see that when God sent the flood He instructed Noah to build an ark where Noah and his family would be protected from the waters during the flood. God didn't take them out of this world, but instead protected them.
In the same way when fire came down on Sodom and Gomorrah, God spared Lot and his two daughters by asking them to leave. They obeyed and were saved, but Lot's wife turned back and immediately became a pillar of stone.
Then again when the plagues came upon Egypt God spared the Israelites.
In the same way God can protect those who believe in Him during the great tribulation.
In Revelation 9:3-4 it says there will be locusts on the earth, which will be given the power of scorpions. These locusts are commanded to torment only those who do not have the seal of God in their foreheads.
This is God pouring out His wrath upon those who do not obey Him, and the believers are saved from this event. The only torment which believers will face is the persecution of men.

What Did Jesus Say About The Great Tribulation?
In Matthew 24 Jesus gives a brief description of what the great tribulation will be like.
He begins with the false prophets, warning His disciples against their deception. Then He goes on to speak about an increase of wars, rumors of wars, famines, and earthquakes, but, "these are just the beginning of sorrows" (v. 8).
He then shifts back and speaks about the false prophets, the abomination of desolation, and then back again to the false prophets. According to Jesus the false prophets are the main characters in the great tribulation.
"For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be." (v. 21.)
He spoke of a spiritual tribulation with spiritual battles, He said in verse 23, "Then if any man say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not."
He said false prophets would come and deceive many with "great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." (v. 24.) This is the great tribulation according to Jesus, and He warned his disciples to "take heed that no man deceive you." (v. 4)
The great tribulation is a spiritual tribulation with spiritual wars and spiritual hunger. Yes Christians will still face persecution and death, and the death toll will increase, but the physical suffering of each individual will be no greater than what Jesus or His disciples faced.
It is the spiritual suffering which will increase as more and more antichrists arise with their false doctrines and other religious activities. Many of these doctrines will seem so right and so easy to listen to, but will cause many people to suffer and die spiritually. They will be pulled in so many directions they won't know who to trust. Jesus said "do not go forth" and "believe it not." (v. 26.)
I believe the tribulation which Jesus spoke of is the same tribulation described in Revelation. I believe it is a spiritual tribulation of spiritual wars, starvation and deception.
The great tribulation is nothing for the Christian to fear, Jesus said "see that ye be not troubled:" (v. 6). Those who love the truth will not be deceived. God will give His people the strength they need to endure all suffering. Jesus will pass on the same strength which He had on the cross to everyone who asks.
He promised He would be with us till the end of the world; He will never leave, nor forsake us.

This more along the lines of the dispensational view than I care to tread on, but I think you're moving in the right direction, a lot better than those who I know who dogmatically stand by a pre-trib rapture stance. I think the more you study, the further you'll get into the details (obviously). Great hub though!
I fall into the catagory of, I can't trust anyone, don't know where I will go, how much I can or can't take but I think the number of the beast is credit cards. No really, I ended up getting a credit card last year and it's id number was 666, spooky. lol.
-so those who refuse to follow the beast will not be able to buy or sell, may very well have to do with actual money becoming worthless and having to use credit cards to buy or sell. hmmm...
so I feel pretty certain that after I decided to stop giving into the credit industry and stop paying or using them all together, they got and get pretty nasty.
Yeah, eventually I can see them coming to kill me over, you know since I can't pay nore can I buy, they will somehow (heaven forbid) justify the very small amount of money as a right to kill me or something. :(
Great writing. My daughter was asking questions about the Pre-Trib beliefs the other day. I think I will just refer her to your eloquent writings.
Thank You
BDazzler,
thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you're going to check it out for yourself...hopefully we can come to an agreement, or just agree to disagree. I'm curious though what those points may be.
t.keeley,
thanks for the comment...not sure if I'm not understanding you correctly, but I don't believe in a pre-trip rapture...I think that's what you meant by the dispensational view.
sandra rinck,
I sometimes wonder too if it won't have something to do with credit cards or the world economic system, but then I think, we all have to have money to get by, and sometimes we do need to borrow...or so it seems. It's weird how the #666 affects us when it appears on the back of the credit card, or anything else.
As for you not being able to trust anyone, perhaps that is a good thing...that's how I got to know God. Just read your Bible and talk to God and he'll help you find your way.
HHO2U,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting...I think there may be something in the hub that suggest I believe in the pre-trib rapture...perhaps I should re-read it more carefully.
Just curious as to how close do you think we are to this fulfillment of prophecy? do you believe that the parable of the fig tree could be representative of Israel's restoration as a nation in 1948 marking this generation as the ones who shall not pass without seeing this fulfilled? Have you heard of this planet x or nibiru or what ever they are calling it now, and if so do you think it could be linked to the sixth seal or perhaps some other end time fulfillment? If you are interested in biblical prophecy I highly recommend the movie "Megiddo the march to Armagedon" this movie does a good job in my opinion of tying the book of Danial and other prophetic books to the book of Revelation as well as blending prophecy to history and present day fulfillment. it also does a wonderful job bringing to light the Illuminati, Free Masonry, and this "New World Order" that is in almost every political speech given in the last 30 years or so, not to mention the movements toward a global religion and it's ties to the beast.
ps I don't believe in a pretrib rapture either though wouldn't it be nice. There is just nothing in scripture to prove it to be more than just wishful thinking.
Jesus_saves_us_7,
Thanks for stopping by! To be honest with you I don't know how close we are; it could be in our lifetime and then again this world could go on a while yet.
2 Peter:3-4 says that in the last days there will be scoffers saying "where is the promise of his coming?" This may refer to unbelievers, but I strongly believe this is talking about believers. I don't know of any believers who say this today, but I believe the day will come.
Today most believers think that Jesus will return in this generation due to the fig tree and the restoration of Israel. Maybe He will...maybe he won't, but if He doesn't return then I can see many turning around and saying "where is the promise of His return?" because this is so widely accepted and believed.
I have not studied this that much, but it talks about when the fig tree brings forth leaves. I believe leaves represent religious activities. Israel doesn't have a temple and I read somewhere that they were thinking of rebuilding it now. Perhaps that is what is meant by the fig tree from when the temple will be built that generation will not pass...?
I have not heard of planet x or nibiru, so I really don't know. As for the movie you mentioned I have not seen it either, but it sounds interesting, maybe I'll see if I can find a copy.
Thanks and God Bless!
I don't believe in the rapture--period. A second coming? Sure, I do believe in that. I believe we're in the millenium, that the kingdom of Christ is now, anything with rapture implies a dispensational view regardless of where it falls. Each generation has its own periods of tribulation, "anti christs", apostates, and troubles. We like to think ours is worse than the last one, but the reality is people have been trying to predict the "7 churches" scheme for centuries and all have been wrong every single time.
Hi t.keeley, thanks for explaining. I don' t know much about the millenium or what exactly it will be like...perhaps I should study it more.
Thanks!
great article, also believe the Great tribulation will be the greatest but last tribulation that the Jews and Christians will have to endure, and the concept of the Rapture like Corrie Ten Boom said makes Christians ill preparred for the tribulation to come.
diode, Yes satan is doing everything he can to keep people from spiritually arming themselves. I also believe many will feel betrayed and lose faith as a result.
Thank you for reading and commenting.
These are good topics EmbracingtheTruth, I have always seen it as the Church will be called away 31/2 years into the Tribulation the only reason I have been led to believe this is the calamity that would follow the Church being taken up to meet him in the air the dead first and then we that are alive. When this happens in will cause a world ripe for the Antichrist to prove his power to all who remain. Just my thought maybe from the Spirit within me. But in any way good hub they bring about good comments for all to see. God Bless
Justcallmeleroy, Thanks for stopping by. I used to think the same thing...how can the anti-christ rule if there are still believers here? But after studying the Bible closer I realize that the antichrist is not someone the world will reject..even Christians will find it difficult.

Well written, well thought out. A couple of points are not exactly the way I interpret it, but before disagreeing, I want to think and pray about it.
