The Greatest Tag Teams in Professional Wrestling
72The Greatest Tag Teams: Introduction
Ah, the greatest Tag-Teams in Professional Wrestling. A much talked about topic past and present. I am going to give you my take on Tag-Team wrestling, and who in my opinion are the best tag-teams in wrestling. I have been a fan of wrestling my whole life, I have seen the rise and fall of tag-teams in many wrestling companies over the years, and I am going to list who I think are some of the best in the history of the sport past and present.
From names such as The Road Warriors to the Steiner Brothers, Tag Team Wrestling has been a dominating part of the world of professional wrestling for generations. From twin brothers to people who barely know each other; some of these teams have gone on to become some of the greatest the sport has ever seen.
Exactly who are these dominating behemoths? Exactly who are the greatest teams of all time?
The Road Warriors: Legion of Doom
Number One: The Road Warriors: Legion of Doom
Number One: The Road Warriors - Arguably the greatest and most well known tag-team in the history of professional wrestling, having wrestled all over the world making a name for themselves in every major promotion in the world. Best friends since childhood, making the chemistry they share in the ring a hundred percent natural. Chemistry is what makes a tag-team successful, knowing each others styles and knowing each others moves, trusting each other completely. This was the way of the warriors. Whenever you mention tag team wrestling, whenever you mention tag-team gold, you automatically think, The Road Warriors, the Legion Of Doom, Hawk And Animal. There is no questioning that even though their illustrious career was cut short due to the untimely death of Road Warrior Hawk, the legacy of the Road Warriors has lived on, and will continue to live on forever, and they will without a doubt go down as one of, if not the greatest and most decorated Tag Teams in the history of the sport itself.
The Steiner Brothers
Number Two: The Steiner Brothers
Number 2: The Steiner Brothers - Nowadays, when you hear the name 'Steiner' you think 'Big Poppa Pump' 'The Genetic Freak' The Big Bad Booty Daddy.' You think simply of Scott Steiner. However, before Scott Steiner was a successful singles competitor, he was even more successful as a tag-team with his real life older brother, Rick Steiner. The Steiners graduated as all-Americans from Michigan, as talented amateur wrestlers aspiring to use their talents to get to the top of professional wrestling... - as a tag-team! The Steiner Brothers are known mostly for their time spent in WCW during the 90's where they engaged in a legendary feud with Doom; Ron Simmons and Butch Reed, as well as many other tag-teams on the scene at the time. The Steiner Brothers have also wrestled in the WWF/E, as well as having MUCH success across the pond in Japan, which in my opinion is really where they shined the most. Japan is famous for it's 'strong style' wrestling, both of the Steiner's, Rick especially, were famous for their powerful hard hitting maneuvers, a lot of which weren't permitted at the time in America, therefore, the Steiners were really in their element in Japan. Recently, The Steiner Brothers have reunited in TNA, possibly for a one-time reunion against Team 3D, continuing their legacy as one of the greatest tag-teams to ever compete in the sport. Much with the Road Warriors, when you mention Tag-Team wrestling, one of the teams that immediately comes to mind, without a doubt, is... Rick Steiner, Scott Steiner, The Steiner Brothers!
The Rock 'N' Roll Express
Number Three: The Rock 'N' Roll Express
Number Three: The Rock 'N' Roll Express - Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, most famous for their on-going feud with The Midnight Express. The Rock 'N' Roll Express were famous for living their name, they WERE their name. Classic rock star, hair metal loving high flyers who stole the show wherever they wrestled. Again, two great friends with great trust for each other. Other than their legendary feud with the midnight express, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson have had great matches with the likes of the legendary Four Horsemen and The Heavenly Bodies. Much as the teams above, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson are a tag-team who can get a crowd working just by stepping into a ring, tag-team legends of old-school wrestling, and will definitely go down as one of the best.
The Four Horsemen
Number Four: The Four Horsemen
Number Four: The Four Horsemen - Not only will The Four Horsemen be remembered as possibly the greatest professional wrestling FACTION to ever be introduced, they will be remembered as producing some of the greatest tag-team wrestlers of all time. The Horsemen consisted of four members: 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair,' 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson and last but certainly not least, Tully Blanchard. The teams often changed, Arn Anderson And Ole Anderson, being one of the most memorable tag-teams, were a prominent and occasional tag-team within the horsemen, but the more memorable tag-team of The Four Horsemen would have to be Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, responsible for the many long-standing feuds within the NWA, although both The Andersons, and Blanchard, have held World Tag-Team championships in the NWA during their time spent with The Four Horsemen. Back in the late 80's, they were the biggest heel faction in the world, and are remembered mainly for that era, although the Horsemen name actually ran all the way into the WCW up until 1999 with different members along the way. The Original Horsemen however, remain the best known of the incarnations, and are regarded as possibly the greatest faction of all time, not to mention, their mention and recognition in my list of the greatest professional wrestling Tag-Teams.
The Midnight Express
Number Five: The Midnight Express
Number Five: The Midnight Express - Another legendary tag-team, which over the years had many members, the two most recognizable and famous incarnations being Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton, and Stan Lane and Bobby Eaton. The Midnight Express are perhaps remembered mostly for their legendary feud with The Rock 'N' Roll Express, which was partly responsible for today's modern day tag-team divisions. 'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton himself is considered one of the founding fathers of modern day tag-team wrestling for his tenure in the Midnight Express. The two incarnations mentioned above are the most successful, and the most remembered, setting the paving stones of each of the participant's careers across the world, but particularly in the National Wrestling Alliance.
Harlem Heat
Number Six: Harlem Heat
Number Six: Harlem Heat A more modern day Tag-Team consisting of real-life brothers Booker T And Stevie Ray. Their success as a tag-team started mainly when they hit the then big-time promotion, World Championship Wrestling, in the early 90's. They went on to become ten time WCW World Tag-Team Champions and sealing their fate as one of the greatest tag-teams to enter the sport in many years, winning the titles a record Ten times, the most in the history of WCW. During their time spent in the company, they engaged in several memorable matches and feuds with wrestlers' such as Sting & Lex Luger, The Steiner Brothers and The Road Warriors, among many more. Harlem Heat eventually split in 1999 with Stevie Ray pending retirement, and Booker T being built up for a main event singles role. However, their legacy lived on as one of WCW's best and brightest tag teams of the 90's, which earns their place on my list of Wrestling's greatest tag-teams.
The Hart Foundation
Number Seven: The Hart Foundation
Number Seven: The Hart Foundation The Hart Foundation, much like the afore mentioned Four Horsemen, were not only a tag-team, but later on in their tenure, a Faction. The original Hart Foundation however consisted of Bret Hitman' Hart and Jim The Anvil' Neidhart, managed by The Mouth Of The South' Jimmy Hart. The team enjoyed success in the WWF originally as Heels, bringing a fresh new approach to the WWF's Tag-Team division with Bret being the more technical and agile performer, and Neidhart being the powerful brawler. The team eventually turned Face after Jimmy Hart turned his back on them, and they got over with the fans immensely which led to two runs with the tag team championships. The original Hart Foundation eventually split up after Bret started a singles run, but their legacy still remains. The time they broke into the WWF as a tag team was a time where great and innovative tag-teams were quite rare within the company, and the foundation, set the foundation, no pun intended, for the future great tag-teams over their tenure, as face and heel, engaging in amazing and memorable matches with the likes of The British Bulldogs and The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers. They were released onto the tag team circuit exactly at the right time, and leave behind a legacy which many modern day teams look up to. The legend lives on!
The British Bulldogs
Number Eight: The British Bulldogs
Number Eight: The British Bulldogs Great Britain's pride and joy, the most successful British Tag-Team to ever compete across the pond in the United States. The British Bulldogs, consisting of real-life cousins Davey Boy Smith and Tom Billington, originally teamed together in the UK's ITV Wrestling show, World Of Sport, in which The Dynamite Kid had success as both a tag-team wrestler, but even more so as a Singles competitor bringing a fresh style of wrestling to the country consisting of Mat and highflying, along with the country's own chain wrestling style. The tag-team eventually gained worldwide fame in the WWF/E competing in memorable feuds with the likes of The Hart Foundation. The team are remembered by legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne, who managed the team during a one-off appearance at Wrestlemania two, in which they won the World Tag-Team Championships from The Dream Team. The team eventually split up, and as most teams go, Davey Boy Smith was dubbed The British Bulldog and given a long-term and widely successful singles run. Despite this, the team remain one of the greatest in the history of the sport, and still to this day one of the greatest and most successful teams that Great Britain has ever sent to the United States.
Team 3D
Number Nine: The Dudley Boys / Team 3D
Number Nine: Team 3D / The Dudley Boys Team 3D, currently competing in TNA, are one of the more modern day tag-teams, who have earned legendary status by holding every major world tag team championship in America, as well as several championships in Japan. They are widely renown for this, and are granted as one of today's greatest tag-teams, and will most likely go down in the history books as one of the greatest tag teams of the modern era, if not, of all time. The team originated in the old Extreme Championship Wrestling as a stable with several members, but the team of Brother Ray and Brother Devon wee the best known of the stable, and went on to capture the tag-team championships in ECW a record Eight times. They eventually went on to the WWF/E, capturing the titles there again, Eight times, as well as an unofficial WCW' World Tag Team Championship run. To put a long story short, Team 3D are one of the most decorated tag teams of the modern era, and without a doubt when the time comes for them to retire, they will be remembered as one of the best of all time. Recently they claimed the NWA, and later, the TNA World Tag Team Championships, adding two more trophies to their record books. They are currently in a feud with the legendary Steiner Brothers.
The Outsiders
Number Ten: The Outsiders
Number Ten: The Outsiders Now this was a tough one to choose for my last one, but looking back I realize most of my teams are from the past, so I felt it's time yet again to introduce a more modern day tag-team, and who better than the comedic Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, The Outsiders? The Outsiders broke into the WCW in 1996, forming the controversial New World Order along with Hollywood Hulk Hogan. The Outsiders, at the time, were a different kind of tag team. Most tag-teams were all action, and given minimal microphone time, yet, when The Outsiders got on the scene, both Hall and Nash are renown as two of the most charismatic Wrestlers of all time, bringing both comedy and seriousness, changing from one to the other in a matter of seconds, able to motivate the crowd to cheer or boo at ease with classic, yet basic lines such as Scott Hall's famous Hey Yo.' Much like other teams, Hall was the more agile, technical based wrestler, bringing mat based and a classic style mixing it with in-ring comedy, whereas Nash was the more serious, big powerhouse, although Nash himself was also common for bringing comedy into his matches. The Outsiders signaled a new generation of Tag-Teams, which also lead to the then WCW rival, the WWF, bringing in D-Generation X, a Tag-Team and stable similar in style and segments to the now in WCW. They won the WCW World Tag-Team championships Six times during their tenure with much success, and also much controversy along the way. The Team, much like most tag-teams, were successful due to their chemistry together in the ring, this of course stems from Hall And Nash being best friends outside of the squared circle. The team remained inactive until 2005 where they re-united, and have since tourned together on the Indy circuit in 2007 and early 2008 before Scott Hall checked into rehab and Kevin Nash resumed his role in TNA Wrestling.
The Future of Tag Team Wrestling
These in my opinion, are Ten of the greatest professional wrestling tag-teams in the history of modern day professional wrestling. Of course, there are many candidates to who could be on the list in ten, maybe twenty years to come, including The Hardy Boys, America's Most Wanted, The Naturals, The Briscoe Brothers and many more. Tag-Team wrestling over the past few years has dropped down the card in the main federations, but the solid tag-team rosters being built every day are based on friendship and trust, the key aspects of a successful team.
Personally, i can see the likes of The Naturals and The Hardy's going down in the history books in the future. The Hardy's are still young and in their prime, and the fans just love them. The Naturals are a newer tag-team, but are best friends, which again, adds the chemistry factor to their matches, which in turn adds to the quality of their tag team matches.
The new generation of tag-team wrestling is beginning. Who could be in this list in a few years time?

Great hub. The mention of some of these tag teams really took me back. I used to love the Rock and Roll Express. I also liked the Midnight Express, especially when Stan Lane joined.
have you ever heard of a wrestler or tag team called the bumble bee?
Alright....good list......but it's hard to have a list of greatest tag teams without the New Age Outlaws (at least being mentioned) or Demolition.
I really like your list, However...I was shocked not to see think the Fabulous ones and the Freebirds not one it.
Jason
Degeneration X!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yea you need the new age outlwas in there and you def need the rockers they revolutionized the tag team division
The Rockers were a combination rip-off of The Rock N Roll Express and The Midnight Express, hense why they started off as The Midnight Rockers, and hense why they got their first big break AGAINST The Rock N Roll Express. The New Age Outlaws never did anything memorable enough to be labelled as a great tag team.
What about the Killer Bees and the Von Erich's?
hey you can't for get about the hardy boyz or the nasty boys
U got #1 and #2 correct then went downhill fast! Come on Rock n Roll express #3! What a Joke! #3 British Bulldogs From here u can say The Outsiders, Samoan Swat Team, Doom,Hart Foundation, Can Am Connection, Rockers, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, Steve Austin and Brian Pillman Hollywood Blondes, But make it clear 3D, Rock n Roll Express and Midnight Express have no talent. Should be lucky they were even in wrestling to began with.
This is such a tricky one. One man's dream tag team may be considered rubbish by someone else. Personally I loved Money Inc and Power & Glory and The Hardys would have definately made my Top 10 ;)
What about the Twin Towers, Typhoon and Earthquake? Or the Mega Powers (Hogan and Savage in the late 80's)
!!!!!!!!! :)
