Where do we start?

July 1, 2008

The climate crisis is here, it is of our making, and like all crises, it is not patiently awaiting our decision to act. And unfortunately, it will not wait for those vocal few arriving late to the problem who are reassured by those profiting from our collective inaction and are more than content to be duped by the wrong information! Meanwhile, as this non-debate rages, the Earth's climate is changing, the polar icecaps are melting, and the millions of species we share this globe with are more than a little adversely effected - their lives are becoming more and more out of step with the seasons and many of these beloved species are disappearing at an alarming rate per year.

I think it will be up to individuals, like you and me, to act to save this planet. We cannot wait for someone else to save us, or for our local, state or federal government to save us. We can certainly encourage our government officials to do the right thing, to provide them with information they may not otherwise see without our input. We may even petition them together to let them know just how many of their constituents feel strongly about these issues. However, our government-sponsored agencies are slow to respond in all but the most dire situations and sometimes those responses are grossly inadequate and/or too late. We cannot rely on them to fix this as quickly as we can at the grassroots.

So what do we do first? Where do we start?

This blog will highlight practical, everyday solutions to living sustainably. Many actions will be introduced that we can take as individuals, right now, today, (or as soon as you move away from your computer!) to address the climate crisis. Of course some actions will require some thought and planning and even organizing others where you live. There will also be reports posted here of what others are doing in the United States and abroad to address the issues of climate crisis, global warming, peak oil, and the energy crisis. I hope too that you will write me of your new ideas, actions and groups you belong to that are making a positive impact that I can share with all here.

Please return again and tell your friends - we will need each other as we grow through this crisis. Let's take these first steps together as we travel this Green Road.

Peace.

Yes, you are right that it is up to us. Every time we drive the speed limit and use less gas, or turn off all lights in rooms we aren't using, or hang our clothes out to dry instead of using the dryer, we are impacting the climate crisis. If hundreds of millions of us do it around the world, it will get better quicker. The planet can be changed, and the CO2 levels can go down. We just have to want to save the world badly enough to do something.

We all need to do our parts, the government may or may not do this but we should contribute and make others around us change. I made my apartment people to recycle paper, plastic etc, before that I was the only one doing it, now I see many are participating.
