The Unicorn And The High Earning Affiliate; Do They Exist?

Is The High Earning Affiliate A Myth?
Is The High Earning Affiliate A Myth?

In Search Of...The High Earning Affiliate Marketer

For anyone considering or already involved with affiliate marketing on the internet, you may be wondering if all of the hype is just sinister marketing by a moneyed few or is there really something to this business model.

Actually, high earning affiliates do exist and they exist in considerable numbers. And that means you can be one yourself.

Affiliate marketing is a high reward/low risk proposition for monetizing your website. Think about it; you don't have to develop a product, that's already done for you. all you have to do is judge for yourself and pick the best products available from the best merchants available.

You have no significant overhead like manufacturing or inventory storage and maintenance.

You don't have to take orders personally so you don't need a merchant account. Your only responsibility is to send people to your affiliated merchants. When people buy you make money. Shipping and handling would be handled by the merchant also.

When you're marketing your own products, a great portion of your day is filled with customer inquiries and support issues which is one of the most important benefits of affilate internet marketing.

Joining affiliate programs usually cost nothing. My advice is to avoid or be very wary of ones that do.

Once you begin to peer under the surface you begin to see why high earning affiliates seem to be so rare.

Actually, most affiliates never make more than a few hundred dollars per month. And, many never make a dime! Why?

It's because they are doing it incorrectly. Many aren't even doing it at all.

So, it is a fact that there are a small number of well known super affiliates that are making some staggering incomes.

There is a larger number making up the top 2% - 3% who are making a decent living marketing affiliate programs.

The fact remains, most affiliates are not earning a return on their investment of time and money.

4 Problems That Kill Affiliates And How To Solve Them

So, What Seems To Be The Problem?

There seems to be four major areas that can be identified as the main reasons most affiliates fail. All four of these problems can be avoided and overcome with the proper strategies and the appropriate tools. Let's examine each area more closely . . .

1. Failure To Prepare - The first area of affiliate failure is a problem common to most people on all areas of life. The tendency to want instant gratification causes almost every affiliate marketer to begin their marketing efforts without sufficient planning and preparation. It can seem like an unproductive use of their time to go through and execute the nitty-gritty details of setting up a workable system. But that is precisely how the successful affiliate marketers succeed! You must prepare your affiliate business by going beyond the affiliate model.

The solution is to apply some thinking and planning upfront by taking the time to develop your best web site theme or concept. Once you do that you must research and find the most profitable topics. Then you can intelligently pick the best related affiliate programs.

2. Being Too Dependent On the Merchants - Most affiliate merchants, even the best ones with the best programs, don't have the resources to train their affliliates. You won't get a start-up manual. You may get a weekly newsletter with some links and banners to put up at your web site but nothing really substantive. They usually don't provide tools to help you with internet marketing. For this reason alone, you can see why the failure rate of affiliates are so high. Avoid total dependency on the merchant.

You'll find that there are many ways to earn an online income without having to deal with customers. There is no reason you shouldn't use every one of them.

The best way to solve this problem; you have to think outside of the affiliate box. Success leaves clues. Do what the successful affiliates are doing. First, they pick the best companies. Those banners you get in their newwletters are ingored. They just go out and do it . . . on their own! The next step they take is they become totally independent by adding other complimentary monetization models.

3. Many Affiliates Don't Even Own A Web Site! Or The One They Have is Non-Performing . . . - If you don't know HTML,you're at a severe disadvantage. And for most just starting out, hiring web site developers and graphic designers are just out of the question.

Then, what about those who do possess this skill? Knowing HTML does not necessarily mean you know anything about marketing or copywriting or any of the other skill sets needed to succeed at affiliate marketing.

What to do? Make a site based on a concept or theme with high value content. It's best if you pick something that you know very well or something that you are very passionate about. Through that high value content, you will attract highly targeted prospective customers which you can then refer to your affiliate merchants.

4. You guessed it. Traffic! Or I should say, no traffic- This is probably the number one issue on the minds of most affiliate marketers. How do I build traffic?

Before the internet, a businesse's most important decision at start up was it's location. If a gas station is built on the right street corner they are almost guaranteed success. Why? Traffic. And lots of it.

But it's totally different on the internet. No one just happens by your website on the internet. People go to a website intentionally. They either click on a link or type in a url.

So it's the people searching for information who have the power.

It's sad that most affiliates never figure out how to work with that power to attract tens of thousands of motivated, interested visitors every day.

Knowing how to work with that power, you can put yourself into their 'click path'.

Here is how the top affiliates ensure their own success:

- They structure the content of their web pages so that the search engines find them 'attractive'.

- They stay on top of what's going on with their web pages' performance in the search engines. They follow each page from the

time it's submitted, through spidering, indexing and ranking.

- They always have more than one way to drive traffic.

- They keep track of Click In and Click Thorough rates.

- They know important traffic stats by using a good log file analyzer.

- They put together a wide variety of expensive tools that they either purchase or create.

These solutions may seem to be out off reach to you. At one time this was true. The playing field has been leveled.

Thank you Reggie,

This is a very informative hub. I followed you every step of the way. What I want to know is... are you a successful affiliate marketer, and if so, how did you put all of the above systems and processes in place?

If you're a member of Renegade University, is this how you used their training? Or did you, which I'm sure you did, continue to seek other education i.e. affiliate classroom?

I would like to connect with your about such matters, or see another HubPage centered around my questions.

Thank you for the quality hub, indeed, good info.

Good job Reggie! Very Helpful information!

Maybe the 5th point you could make is to "Just do it!"

That's what I did and it earned me $2,000 the first two days after launch and will end up doubling my income by the end of my first year!

I find that the problems in Affiliate Marketing, Internet Marketing, or Attraction Marketing are the same as I found in the old-school methods of Network Marketing…. Procrastination!

People put up a few pages of content and then sit back and wonder why they are not seeing much in the way of results. Then they start to lose belief and the little effort they started with is now down to just searching and reading on the Internet. (That will not do it!)

My suggestion is to just keep moving forward with what you are learning and then learn some more. And whatever you do, don't look back except to see how much you have grown!

Good luck to every marketer! It sure is worth it!

Excited,

Bob

As an affiliate marketer I have to say that you did a great job including much of the "technical" side of the affiliate marketing process.

Reggie,

The points you made about why we should be considering affiliate marketing make you wonder, why wouldn't I want to be an affiliate marketer? The only thing left for us to do is follow thru with the marketing effort and find traffic. On the other end, I can see why many fail. There is still work involved. Some programs are easier than others in the way we relate to them.

Thanks, Becky Joubert

Thanks again for the feedback folks. It is obvious our community is made up of like-minded people. People who think like Mrs. Fields of "Mrs. Fields Cookies".
