What is the alkaline diet?

The alkaline diet is also known as the alkaline ash diet, the alkaline acid diet and the acid alkaline diet. The objective of this simple diet is to create a balance of slight alkalinity in the body ranging from 7.35 to 7.45. The typical Western diet largely consisting of meat, dairy, saturated fats, sugars, alcohol and caffeine causes acid wastes to build up in the body. Maintenance of the correct pH level of the body’s internal fluids is possible with the alkaline diet.

What happens if there is an imbalance?

If there is an imbalance present such that the level of acid is higher than the alkaline, the discrepancy will create a perfect environment for harmful microforms including yeasts, fungus and molds as well as bacteria and viruses to live in. When acid wastes enter the bloodstream, the blood system will attempt to dispose of these, but eventually, the over-acidification of the body can negatively affect us resulting in conditions such as weight problems, allergies, fatigue, diabetes, heart problems and cancer.

What are the foods that can be consumed with this diet?

The alkaline food chart has generally classified two groups: the acid-producing foods and the alkaline-producing foods. The acid-producing foods include sugar, diary products, meat, caffeine, high sugar fruits, saturated fats, processed foods, certain nuts, condiments and pasta. Alkaline-producing foods, on the other hand, include broccoli, celery, cucumber, spinach, asparagus, cabbage, certain nuts, avocados, carrots, basil, parsley, flaxseed oil, olive oil, lemons and grapefruit.

The ideal daily intake of foods is 80% alkalizing and 20% acidifying.

Why shift to the alkaline diet?

By keeping to the optimum 80/20 balance and regulating the body’s acid/alkaline chemistry through simple dietary changes, it is possible to boost energy levels. At the same time, the diet can result in weight loss/correct weight regulation, increased stamina and strength, a stronger immune system, increased mental clarity and a greater sense of wellbeing.
