Let's see... The Hippie Era. What a great topic! (I think...?)
I was sitting here the other day, completely BLANK, not knowing what to write about... Then it came to me... The Hippie Era! But after thinking about it for a moment, I wasn't sure what I wanted to say about it! So, I got online, and searched "The Hippie Era-1969".
First, I searched "images", and I received pictures of "Woodstock", and hippies, and famous rock legends, such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, The Who, Santana, CCR, the Greatful Dead, and other well known "Hippie Era" legends that were present at Woodstock in 1969. I also grabbed a funny picture of "bath-time" during Woodstock... Too cute!
Then there were pictures of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and of course peace signs, water bongs and glass pipes, pictures of marijuana plants, the all-time famous "John Lennon" Sunglasses, bellbottoms, tye-dye shirts and clothing, headbands, hemp necklaces... You name it, it was there!
Love, Peace and Happiness, Baby! ...Make Love Not War!!! All the great photo shots almost put me there, myself. I could almost hear "Me and Bobby McGee" in the background, and smell reefer in the air! (What a great era, eh?)
Hippies defenately made their opinions known, as "Freedom of Speech" was being practiced frequently back then. They had strikes for this and strikes for that, picketers for this and that... Everyone, especially females, were letting their views be known. They were against war, and faught for peace, pleaded for peace... The girls burnt their bra's just to make a point! (Why not, they didn't wear them anyway!) Actually, most of the time, hippies were "sky-clad" (or naked). And they were of different religions, and race was not a factor. Hippies truly believe that everyone is equal, no matter what color they are, or what religion... It's all about loving one another, and coming together as one so we can all live peacefully.

Hippie-Must-Have's:
Hippies:
Hippies are against fur coats. (again, because we must love one another, including animals and plants, and everything!) They also do not believe in "testing on animals", which is only right! Why don't they do the tests on actual humans?
Hippies, in other words, were "naturalists"... They wanted nothing more than peace, love and happiness. (And I wonder if the assassination of John Lennon was because the government was afraid to have everyone happy, because then they wouldn't be in control...)
Who knows? But I know this much- Hippies, in 1969, were mostly happy, and this was mostly due to yoga, meditation, mind-over-matter, "inner peace"... and some fancy-named drugs. (reefer, magic mushrooms, acid, coke, LSD, heroine... actually, they came out with some pretty cool names for these drugs, but the outcomes were tragic...)
They also had some pretty groovy styles going on! In these following pictures, I'll show you what you would need to look like a hippie. (Notice: Check out my hub "Celebrity Hippie Hairstyles", as some people may not look right as a hippie! Ha, ha, ha!)

My Final Thought:
All in all, I think the Hippie Era was awesome. Not only did they believe in love, peace and happiness, but they were all good at heart, down to earth, natural born lovers of individuality, freedom, and "inner peace", (no matter how they had to get it!)
They showed others that it's okay to stand up for your rights. Blacks were given more rights in the 60's, Women learned that they were equal to men. Gays and lesbians came out of their closets, more apt to stand up because of the Freedom Act... I could go on and on... Hippies taught us a good lesson, if you paid attention to what they concentrated on...
We should all love one another...

I agree with the last phrase. We should all love one another eventhough the person don't like you or hate you. In the Bible, one of the commandments is to love your enemies.
Yes, keep your friends close...but keep your enemies CLOSER!
Learning to love one another seems impossible now-a-days with all the hatred and distrust everyone holds deep within them... Learning to free the mind of such clutter is a not so used technique anymore for some reason...?

LOL! I was smiling throughout your entire hub, the photos brought back memories. I was a child of the 70's, protested against the Vietnam war, wore the bell bottoms, and head bands, didn't do drugs, so I wasn't a hippie, hippie, like my nephew, but was very influenced by the times; did the meditations, healthy living, was involved with feminism, and woo-woo stuff, all which still influences me to this day, but I am much more mellow nowadays.
BDW, read your comment to evekic- there are a lot of groups and people focusing on love nowadays; I have participated in group meditations for world peace- its an ongoing thing... there are gurus teaching self love and peace, etc, its just not as loud or colorful as it was in the 60's and 70's.
Really? I guess I have learned everything I believe on my own... Stemming from experiences, and learning from looking into things on my own... I've always felt a "familiarness" with the past (meaning before I was born), and I still haven't quite put my finger on why...
I was just searching google earlier, and found a site on "Super-human Abilities" which states that EVERYONE has the ability to use these special "super-human" powers, some of us just don't know HOW... Well, there's a test, and the higher your score, the higher your chancees are at perfecting that ability... I wonder who would have the exact steps to take in doing this...? Any ideas?

MDF: Its good to look for things on your own, we have all the knowledge of the world within. I have been amazed how my s/o will share an idea about truth and the like, and we think no one has thought about it, and then we end buying a book or hearing someone speak who also came to the same conclusion, using almost identical words.
Yes, we have the potential to do much, much more than what we are doing, but I don't know who would have the exact steps to the super human abilities you mention. Maybe you could put in a hub request? We have hubbers who are very interesting. :)
Or maybe I'll just do the research myself...? Who knows?!

Hi Mama great hub. But it wasn't all peace and love. read my hub on Hare hair Hare for a bit about that time. Also the play Hair shows a sadder side of that free love era. It illustrates the impact of the Vietnam war and the beginning of the single mother syndrome. The free love aspect brought many "fatherless" children into the world and I guess tales of hardship which were perhaps not told. One needs to look at both sides of this coin. Also the protests lead to shootings by the National guard too. The Play Hair definitely illustrates this point well, if you look beyond the nudity and sensationalism of the play.

Everybody can have "superhuman" powers: all potential of all human abilities is within us: in our aura, in our heart... we need just a little bit of practice, and time. The steps for your expansion are within you. You hold the key. I would only comment: it is wise to choose - useful powers only, ha, ha, ha!

sixtyorso- Yes, I am aware that this was a hard time for this generation... I'm sure that with the war going on, and hippies protesting it, (and other things), it must have been a time of hardship. I was just trying to focus on the positive side of it all. Myself, I think it would've been a rush to live my teenage years in the 60's... But, I guess I just wasn't meant to be there in this lifetime!

I know YOU DO!!! As far as super-human powers, I truly believe! The kids who sit indian-style on the floor and bend a spoon by just looking at it... I've practiced doing this, but never succeeded! I was there at the beginning, UC Bizerkeley, the Peoples Park, free-speech marches, Mario Savio, David Horowitz, and all the rest...an idealistic age much over-hyped by my generation.
maven... You were one of the ones in front of the crowd yelling "MAKE LOVE,NOT WAR!" right? And I bet you had a full head of hair back then too! You were a hippie, maven, weren't you??? Ha ha ha. Just kidding. Thanks for the comment maven. I'd like to hear more of your opinion tho... :)
Shannon...Let me just point out that Mario Savio, the free speech leader in the early 60's, is now the publisher of a very conservative newsletter in Marin County, and David Horowitz, his 2nd in command back then, is a world renowned conservative thinker and publisher of " Heterodoxy ", a monthly collection of conservative thought....they both went from passionate liberalism to passionate conservatism....
The old adage " To be young is to think with your heart, as you age you begin to think with your brain ", certainly applies here...
Interesting hub .I was just a kid during that Era , but I do Remember Jimi , Woodstock and all the psychedelic posters with black lights . And there was an artist name Peter Max who did some of the most Intersting Artwork . I feel very fortunate to have grown up In some Interesting times And the all you need Is love thing the hippies always said was right ,unfortunately we live In a world where that just Isn,t possible . Oh and Ezy Rider was the big movie of that time with some young upstart named Jack Nicholson !
I wasn't born until 1977, but I remember hearing about it all... And it always made me wish I would've been born just a few years earlier... (like 10 years earlier!
Jack Nicholson! I love him! He's such a good actor! (kinda makes me wonder if he and Christian Slater are related...they look a lot alike!)
I wasn't around till 1978...
But I was the daughter of someone who actually did march in one or two protests in Chicago. No one famous, and he didn't do the psychedelic thing, but what he DID agree on was the whole Love One Another thing. See, at the time, my dad was studying to be a minister, right in the thick of things...he's even got a couple "hippie"-looking pendants from his early days as a student preacher...
And then...in 1978, I was born...in 1986, I was introduced to the music of Jon Anderson of Yes, whose band took shape in '68. It was a solo album that he had done that got me going on his own love-and-peace vibe...then I realized in 2002 the kind of music Yes did (particularly with my Muse Jon at the helm)...and I fell in love with the hippie era all over again, even though I was born ten or twenty years too late to join in the fun.
Yet...the things the hippies promoted...the peace, love, and organic food sort of thing...it's all coming back full circle. Maybe not in as loud or raucous a manner (a shame, really!), but it's coming back around... thank Goddess!

Loved the music, the clothes ( when not extreme) the girls, the attitude but hated the politics. I do get a kick out of all my anti capitalist friends that moved on to being bankers and corporate types. it was a make believe idealogy, run by children spoiled by good times and a "me" attitude. The adults that struggled through wwll I guess were too tired to stand up for their principles and let the strangest of characters take over the debate. I'm reminded that i did have tickets to woodstock but was in the army at the time and couldn't get the time off. Part of me is glad I missed it, the dream of it has to be better than the reality. Great hub.

interesting collection of stuff from the hippie area but... although Woodstock was maybe hippie-ish, many of the performers weren't.. dont remember ever thinking of the Who as psychedelic, nor Hendrix for that matter. Janis Joplin was more difficult - loved her but hippie hmmm.. Jefferson Airplane definitely though and of course the Collectors (who weren't at Woodstock..) No furcoats? But we all wore afghan furcoats, espcialy the US hippies in Amsterdam..Meditation kind of passed me by and Sex? that just changed from "taboo" to "must" so that was no change at all; after all we were about freedom and freedom to choose :) Above all we had fun though. non-violent, non-confrontational (amongst ourselves anyway)... I still long for those times. I cut my hair but never lost that feeling..
Wow. Seeing those pictures and hearing Janice sing Me and Bobbie McGee brought back those old feelings of being a kid. I was 5 in 1969. But I remember well. We owned the booming bar in a small town in Southern Ohio at the time. I can see the young soldiers walking in after coming back from Vietnam. Most were not even old enough to drink. However, My grandma who owned the bar would always yell out, "DAMN IT, THESE BOYS ARE OLD ENOUGH TO FIGHT IN A WAR, THEY OUGHT TO BE OLD ENOUGH TO DRINK". "Serve Em whatever they want,"while beetle tunes are blaring from the jukebox.We had go go girls that danced on the weekends with a live band in our bar and i remember thinking as a kid that they were so beautiful and could dance so well. Im sure the dancers are what inspired my many years as a dancer. Ballet, not Go Go. LOL. I remain a hippie. At heart, in dress, in lifestyle. I even live in the hippie artsy university area of my city.Thanks for the memories
