The History of the wedding dress
74Wedding dress from 1830
The wedding dress hasn't always been white. They didn't always come with the veil. Bridesmaids weren't always part of the affair, and as a matter of fact it wasn't always a fairy tale ordeal. The bride didn't have the option of choosing to get married and the groom didn't always propose with a ring.
Do you remember the cave man image of the man carrying the club and dragging the woman behind him by her hair? Well that image is somewhat correct. Back in those days woman were treated as an item of value not of beauty and poise. The woman were traded or sold. for the intent of running the household of the man that purchased her. Usually for sexual desires, and barring children.
In those days before medicine was a readily available source, it was said that the color of dress you chose would decide your fate The dress was a meaningful symbol for a wide variety of things. In addition to the purity it was also a wives tale that the color of your dress would bring you luck.
In the Victorian Era on the woman's wedding day she wore as much fabric as she could. The reason for this was to show her wealth. Especially with the kings and queens. When the princess was promised to another country to be wedded for a pact she was dressed in as much fabric, fur, diamonds, ruby's and gems as you could possibly put on a dress. Also the color of the dress would show wealth as well, because back then when fabric was colored they would use the juices from fruits to change the color, and the brighter and more color it had on the dress, the more money the brides family had to spend on the dyes used to get that color.
The wedding dress wasn't always white. That really didn't come into effect until after 1840 when Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe Coburg. Much like other fashions in this country the white wedding dress originated in London.
Even though when the white was started it was said that a bride would wear white to show their purity and virginity. Although before the white was in effect it was actually blue. The blue not only showed the purity but also fidelity, and eternal love. The blue came from the virgin mary who is said to have worn blue on the day of the birth. Now with the white being the color of the dress brides are still wearing the blue. As in the expression something old, new, borrowed, and blue.
With the modern technology and different dyes and chemicals available it is possible to have any wedding dress imaginable to wear on your special day. They come in many different designs.
