The Holiday: A Movie Review
47
I wasn't expecting to like this movie...
I got home tonight and, much to my surprise, found that my cable company had finally, after months of promises, gotten their On Demand system working in my neighborhood. So, of course, I had to spend the evening playing with it. I mean, there really wasn't anything on anyway, other than some Stargate reruns. But I digress.
After watching some random bits and pieces of things, I started up a movie I had heard bad things about. Why? Well, it was free, it was sitting there waiting to be watched whenever I hit the OK button, and I figured if it was as bad as I'd heard, I go searching for something else.
Besides, it had Kate Winslet in it. And I ♥ me some Kate.
As you may have guessed, the movie in question is The Holiday, starring Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black. I feel very confident in saying that if you have ever harbored a crush on any of these individuals, particularly Winslet or Law, you must see this film. As stated above, this demographic certainly includes me. And I have to say, I enjoyed it immensely. Nothing is easy in this romantic comedy. At least not by romantic comedy standards. The characters have complicated lives and they don't always do and say exactly what you want or think they should or will. The ending is too pat, I'll give you that. I could have done without the last scene altogether and still felt satisfied, personally. But overall, I was charmed by the movie. And it didn't hurt that it featured Kate "dancing" in bed in her jammies. Frickin' adorable.
What's a bit odd to me is that one of the main characters (Diaz) is supposed to be a very successful movie trailer, um... director? Editor? She splices together bits of a film and writes the voiceover stuff. And yet, this movie's trailer was, in my opinion, misleading. It looked to me (when they were running the ads last year) like the four leads go skiing together and hilarity ensues. Which is not remotely the plot of the film, thankfully.
Anyway, like I said, if you have Kate or Jude love, seek this movie out. I suspect it'll charm the pants off you. And maybe even surprise you. And when was the last time you could say that about a romantic comedy?
