The Imminence of a Retirement Home
55
Imagine living your life to the fullest, bungee-jumping, having a thriving career a loving family, and imagine all these gone in a flash. Well, not exactly in a flash, more like in sixty-seventy years' time. Without even realizing it, here you are playing chess with worn out wooden pawns, thinking of how fast the proverbial time ticks away, without anyone willing to spend his in order to take care of you. The ancient Cronos, the Greek god of Time was represented mythically by a father that ate his children; it is exactly so: time builds and gives birth to life and at the same time it destroys and devours. It is high time we thought of building by ourselves our future, and not let fate direct us to the mercy of our sons and daughters, when we become ripe in age. Retirement homes are viable solutions to this problem.
How To Retire
Working our fortune throughout our lives, wrinkles never fail to catch us from behind at due time. Some of us just drift through life, choosing to complain how hard everything is, and waiting desperately to retire. At the beginning, retirement sounds like paradise on earth-all this free time just for ourselves, having the chance to travel to the Caribbean or visit Peru. Indeed we have the money but not the strength anymore and we may as well take over mundane habits together with our husband or wife, if we're fortunate. Before you even know it, these day-to-day activities become harder and a retirement home isn't as dreary a prospect as it was.
We should get acquainted with the two different types of retirement homes: the nursing homes and the assisted living retirement home. The former is a truly dreaded possibility, because it is designed for the challenged elderly persons. The latter is the one with "paradise on earth" because it enables the retired person to have his own apartment, depending on his income and preferences, and lead a perfectly normal life, in the middle of a community: there is the banquet hall where everybody eats or he may have the meal sent to him in the room. The trained staff and nurses are taking care of every enlisted person and the therapists develop a schedule of interesting activities. The nursing homes are an option also but feared, regarded with contempt they are indeed, and with reason. Usually, they become the last places the old live in, because here a greater attention is given to illnesses, such as Alzheimer or dementia. Those who retire here are sick and without any financial or emotional support from the family. Consequently, nursing retirement homes are poorly paid and mostly in miserable states, having the patients on the hallways for days, sitting in wheelchairs, so that the few nurses can observe their medical state. Fortunately there are many charitable organizations that visit nursing retirement homes, making the day a little brighter to the "tenants", as visitors are not numerous.
We can only hope that in due time, our kin will be grateful enough to take care of us, or to place us in an assisted living retirement home that stands a far cry from the gloomy, ominous nursing homes. All we have to do is to plan ahead a bit...
