Every year, millions of people undertake an international travel to explore the world, attend business meetings or for educational purposes as researchers and students. But a ton of people also come back from their trips with unpleasant stories to tell and bitter experiences gained.

So, what should you do to avoid being one of the unlucky ones?

There are probably a dozen answers to that question. However, here are a few basic, but crucial, tips to help make your next international travel (or sojourn into the unknown, if you would rather call it that) memorable and stress-free.

Attend to Your Luggage. It is not a good idea to leave your luggage unattended or unsecured, even in your hotel room. It is best to always have them by your side when you are on the road and have them locked and secured when in your place of lodging. You never know who is snooping around. Also, forget about being nice and helping others with their stuff. You never know what they are carrying or what they are setting you up to.

Make Copies of Travel Documents. What is worse than being held up by immigration and customs officers during an emergency? As a precaution, you could make copies of your travel documents-including vaccination cards, visas, passport and others-and keep them safe and in a different bag as the originals. This way, even if you misplace the originals, you at least have a starting point.

Get Your Vaccinations. Make sure that your shots are up to date and that you take any additional ones that are required for the place your are traveling to. You obviously don’t want to feel ill or be denied entry just because you did not have the required vaccinations.

Keep Your Money Safe. Always carry a limited number of cash and travelers’ checks with you when outside. The reason being that sometimes, travelers have being the target of stealing and even robberies. But if you have just a few to lose at any such time, you will not feel the sting as painful as it would have been. Also, make sure that your credit cards won’t be expiring while you are still on your international travel. Believe it or not, there are few things as worse as being stuck in some far-off place penniless and helpless.

Don't Forget Travel Insurance. Nobody plans for unpleasant experiences, but they do come knocking sometimes no matter how prepared you were. Accidents, bodily injuries and even death are common occurrences for international travelers. So, your best bet would be to take out an adequate travel insurance policy in case you need one.
