Summertime Bass

Summertime is a terrific opportunity to go northern fishing. The days are long and the air temperature is very comfortable. Fishing for bass this time of year requires a different strategy as the bass prefer the dark. Most bass lakes and streams are noisy during the day with personal water craft and water sking. Bass feed during the quiet hours so this is the best time to catch them.

The best formula is to use a black jitterbug surface plug when you are night fishing. That is going to be the most visible color for the fish to see against the night sky. Use a 3-inch 5/8 ounce style that is easy to cast.

Find fish will be easier at night also. Concentrate your efforts along the shoreline cover and shallows near deep water. Frogs, crayfish, baitfish are active in these areas after dark and provide forage for feeding bass. Check out these areas during the day before you begin fishing so as to pick the best place. Chose a night that is cloud covered and as dark as possible. The blacker the night, the better they feed. You will be able to track your surface plub better is there is little to no wind.

Lake areas near docks and marinas provide shallow and weeded areas for the bass. Another great place is deeper channels where the bass are travelling to get to the weeded areas to feed.

Be sure to keep quiet as the noise will spook the fish. Avoid making splashes while wading and banging things around. Stealthy fishermen do better at catching fish.
