As the Bacon Sizzles

My wonderful fiance is in the kitchen right now replicating a burger we saw on the travel channel. We were watching the fun show, Man Vs. Food. In Minneapolis there are two fueding restaurants that fight over who created the burger first. There was a patron who used to come in to the restaurants and order this burger, someone asked "What's it called?" and he said, "The Jucy Lucy".You might have noticed that, to us, it's spelled wrong. The first time it was put up on the menu, it was misprinted and was never changed.

They looked so appetizing, we just had to try them ourselves! We added bacon, though as we're avid bacon fans.

Here's the Recipe

Take two patties of any amount of beef you want (you could probably even use homemade veggie burgers if you're willing to eat cheese. Actual veggie patties might be too stiff.). We used two 1/4 pound patties for each burger and it worked out very well. What works best is if you have pre-flattened patties (you can buy these at your local grocery store) but if you don't you can use wax paper. Put one piece of wax paper down and put your beef in the middle. Place another piece of wax paper on top and squish! Smash it down until it's a standard patty size, about 1/2" thick and 4-5" in diameter. Do this until you have two perfect patties per person.

We used two Kraft's cheddar cheese slices per burger and chopped them into quarters, but you could use any cheese you want. This is where the fued comes in. One restaurant only uses American cheese, the other restaurant uses several (bleu, cheddar, mozzarella, etc.).

Stack the cheese in the center of one patty. Put the other patty on top and pinch the sides. It will look like a little pregnant burger.

Cookin' Time

Cook the burgers to your liking (grilled or sauteed). Be careful, if you poke the burger, the cheese will go all over your pan or grill! We did ours well done but you can cook yours however you want. Remember to add bacon if you want, we love bacon!

This is such a nice, classic burger with a little oomph! The cheese is really hot when it first comes out but the consistency is so creamy and good.

Try fries or a green salad on the side and it makes a great dinner or lunch. If you're cooking for other people, maybe don't tell them the cheese is inside, it might be an interesting surprise! Then again, you don't want them to burn themselves so it depends if they're your friends.
