The Keeper & The Godhood: Two Very Short Stories

THE KEEPER
Walking in the alley alone can be one hell of a frightening thing, but what choice you got? It aint like there’s any other routes to take when you’re going to see the Keeper. And it aint like you get to see him anyways; it’s like all get to see is this blurry figure behind a semi-transparent curtain, smoking like a fiend.
The keeper runs the streets. We all gotta pay him tribute once a month. And if you don’t, well something’s bad is supposed to happen to you. They say the Keeper is an evil thing from the Heart of Africa - a thing so terrible that even taking him into sight can kill a man. Well, I’m fed up with all that bull. Now, I’m about to expose the Keeper or whateveriz’ his real name for the fraud that he really is. I got a wife and three kids who rely on me for god’s sakes! And I’m supposed to come up with dough every month for sumkindadude I never seen! Well, sheeks, I aint sucking up no more!
(5 minutes later)
He angrily crashes into the Keeper’s domain, walks up to the curtains, and in a fury yanks it open. As the smoke slowly begins to clear up, time seemed to freeze all around him; then he began to see. O yes, he did see. But to god, he wished he didn’t; because now he knew he would never see his wife and three kids again. Before he died he couldn’t help but think - I should have paid the damn monthly tributes.
THE GODHOOD
The Guru travelled the four quarters of the Earth in his quest for Godhood. He had climbed the Andes Mountains and communed with the Aukis, he had channelled powers through them. He had been to Tibet, where he had been ‘blessed’ by the Seven descendants of Baghrah the Blur. He had wined and dined with the Naga and Nagini in India, who being so pleased with his visit, had after placed on him the Spirit of the Cobra – the power to will and command any snake to do your bidding. He had seen all sorts of creatures – creatures you could only read about in a fantasy tale. He had seen them all, but one creature was left to see...the only creature that could give him the only piece of information he needed in his quest...the creature that could tell him for sure, if he would attain Godhood...the Volva.
The Volva, an ancient demon-prophetess, long dead and forgotten...whose grave no man could find. The Volva hadthe answer to every question in the Universe. But one had to resurrect her first to obtain an answer from her. After giving her answer, she would go die again. Awaiting another resurrection...
The Alchemists of Belial had shown him the way to the Volva, swearing him into a blood oath with their Order. It was instant death to defy the blood-oath – even for a Wizard of the Perfect Sorcery such as himself.
He had the found Volva’s grave in the midst of clefts, in an ethereal oasis locked away somewhere between the East of Eden and Gomorrah. He smiled evilly to himself, and then he uttered the dark incantation. The words are too heavy for me to put into writing, or else they will slay the reader. As he uttered the ancient words taught him by a million Djinn, the winds began to blow heavy dusts into his eyes, but he wouldn’t even blink. Then a crashing, thunderous crack of a sound, so sharp it nearly deafened him, if not for his superior being. The Volva flew out of the ground, suspended in mid-air, her ragged-clothes flaying ferociously, revealing an ugly, burnt-up old skin...
eeeeEEEEEEEE!!!! Screeched the Volva. But the sound didn’t seem to come from her hollow mouth – it came from everywhere, encapsulating him every side, just like the force of the wind.
His eyes are full of sand, but he still wouldn’t blink.
“O Gracious Volva, I greet thee!” I say Gracious my ass! I’ve seen the Volva, and hey, it makes Medussa into a wife-material. No kidding.
“Grant me the knowledge to my quest...shall I indeed attain Godhood?” The Guru breathed in a whisper.
Time is suspended. Even the dust flying all around seemed to hang in mid-air...a gazillion atoms.
One thing the Djinn and the Alchemists neglected to tell the Guru was that a negative answer from the Volva would instantly slay a man. They always leave out important bits of information like that, these magical beings!
Naaaaaaaaaaay! Screeched the Volva, then, heeee heeeeeeee heeeeeeeeee heeeeeeee! She fell back inside her grave.
Nothingness followed the Guru.

Is there no end to your talents...... how I love you fiery
You're making me all mushy now, Brenda...hey, love ya back...
It is an interesting story.
Thanks a lot Philipo.
Godhood is not easily achieved and the searchers generally fall vicitm to their own greed. A good more to the story. Thanks for the imaginative work.
Yeah, fiery. You're nuts for undertaking such a task as the Mythological Encyclopedia Britannica you call a hub but proved even nuttier when you actually attempted it! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU MAN? I loved the variety of beasts as in Naga and Nagini with the implication of the Guru being of the traveling warrior sort, kicking fannies and taking names...Hoowahh! Did you ever read Monkey, the Chinese Classic? I highly recommend it, which gives me a great idea for a hub...As always man, great job!
I love a happy ending. ;) These are brilliantly written.
Hi Fierycj. I really enjoyed reading Godhood. I think the Guru's quest is very dangerous. Volva is very interesting.
Thanks for a very good read. :)
Interesting reads Fiery. I admire your talent and look forward to reading more from you. :)
@Pete. I agree with you. I believe the order of things in nature are designed such that man can only attain to certain heights. Going beyond that design is asking for it. Thanks for a dropping in.
@Dohn. I always laugh at your comments. You're da boss! I never read the Monkey classic, but it sure does sound cool. thanks man.
@Davi. Thanks gurl. I almost hate endings, for me. I think real life is full of tragedy.
@Lady_E. I'm glad you like it. More to come for sure. Thanks.
Thanks CJ, for Godhood, which I found to be a highly descriptive, interesting, and rich read.
The Keeper brought a wry smile to my face, it was a thought provoking and succinct story. : )
Thanks for dropping in, Ann. Keeper for meant was meant as a sucker punch kinda dark humour. You gotta have a dark sense of humour to appreciate it. Godhood was created from established characters that have lived in my head for years. Perhaps that explains the depth of description you spoke of that went into it. Btw I appreciate your comments.
I love th ecreativity displayed in these two short stories...U really got a lot of stuff going on in your mind...and you sure have a great way of bringing em out...Nice work coz
Thanks a lot, chuxe. I appreciate the kind comments.
CJ, guess I missed the point--don't see the Keeper as a sucker punch; dang fool shoulda seen that one coming. Serves him right, buying all that schmaltzy Wizard-of-Oz-blowing-smoke stuff. :D
Then again, one point leaps out at me in Godhood. Dunno if the other Commenters missed it or just figure discretion is the better part of valor. But since you-the-narrator state, "I have seen the Volva...", and you're still around to tell the story (literally), then her answer to you must have been in the affirmative. Otherwise, you'd have come up on the short end of the slay stick and there'd be no one to report on the Snafu by the Guru.
Or is there yet another loophole, another key tidbit of information "left out" by those tricky magical beings?
Ha ha ha Ghost, I was hoping someone would notice that. You see there's this thing I do whenever I'm doing narratives - I make a subtle remark that speaks of my knowledge and not necessary the third-person. You're a very talented reader for noticing. I just love dark humour, really. Thanks for dropping by, Ghost. :)
Daredevils both your characters, literally, no pun intended.
Nothing more foolish, that's what you want to teach us? Anyway, always liking your writing.
Fiery, are you doing some filming, short videos, something that you could show us?
Hey Rosa, where have you been? Missed ya. Hey, you always get me. Both stories have pretty the same moral lesson. Hey, I'm presently working on a screenplay for a movie that I'll be shooting once I'm done. Have you checked out They Call Me Fiery CJ - A Rant About Murder hubs? Nice to have you here after such a long while.
Never far away, Fiery, even if I don't write all the time.
Thats good to know, Rosa. Always stay close. :)
Volva reminds me one of my friends lololo she is as mean as the dickens to her husband, I enjoyed the ending and you did capture your characters and I am in agreaance with Ghost is there a loophole? :)
Ha ha ha some friend, AEvans. Lol. And yes, like I said to Ghost. There's a loophole...aww shucks, I'll say it already...everytime I write a story, notice that I'm subtle narrating the story. Its actually me talking. So yes I am from the Volva's time *sinister grin*. I leave that bit open in every of my story. Now you have my whole secret, woman. :)

The Keeper is just a wild thing I came up with like yesterday, as soon as I woke up. Thought it would make for an interesting read.
The Godhood is actually a spin-off from my unpublished (but copyrighted) novel, O Lucifer Son of the Morning. I changed a few things, like for instance in my novel, the Guru does actually get a positive answer from the Volva, and does continue in his quest. But I’m not saying anything more. The Volva is a real mythological creature, who I’ll talk about when I get to ‘V’ in my Mythological Creatures hub. The Naga and the Nagini will go for ‘N’, and the Djinn for ‘D’. I already talked about the Aukis in the ‘A’ part of the hub. Baghrah the Blur is a character from my novel. I played around with the Seven Descendents part, sounded cool to me. Alchemists of Belial and Perfect Sorcery (the highest level of dark magic, attained by only a select few) are concepts I made up in my novel. The Spirit of the Cobra is made up by me as well, but it’s a dark form of sorcery featured in my novel. Hope you enjoyed it!
