Perhaps one of the greatest kung fu films of all-time was Berry Gordys now legendary cult classic, The Last Dragon. This film would go on to inspire numerous artists ranging from the animators for the Adult Swim cartoon Venture Bros. to most recently and most famously Kanye West, with his "Sho'Nuff" sunglasses he single-handedly brought back to mainstream attention.
Shot in 1984 in various locations around New York City and released by Tri Star Pictures on March 22, 1985, The Last Dragon tells the tale of a young man by the name of "Bruce" Leroy Green (this was martial artist Taimaks first role after being discovered by a casting director at the age of 19) and his quest to become the greatest martial artist just like his idol, Bruce Lee. Leroy faces many obstacles in his quest for "The Glow", a mythical power only the greatest fighter alive can posses, including the evil arcade mogul, Eddie Arkadian (Christopher Murney) and the evil Shogun of Harlem himself, Sho'Nuff (the late Julius Carry III). Along the way Leroy must protect his younger brother Richie (Leo O'Brien) as well as his love interest TV Music Video Host Laura Charles (Vanity).
The movie is also remembered for its soundtrack featuring the hit song "Rhythm of The Night" by DeBarge that climbed all the way up to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Less notably though, the title theme for the movie was nominated for a 1985 Golden Raspberry Award for "Worst Original Song". Ouch!
A remake is currently in the works with Samuel L. Jackson as Sho'Nuff. Berrys son Kerry Gordy and RZA (of Wu-Tang Clan fame) are set to produce.

I remember seeing this in the theatre when it came out.
I loved "The Glow" and I always wondered if they got that idea from Marvel's Iron Fist.
And I love seeing Lord Bowler from "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr." as the bad guy.

This looks pretty cool. =) I've never heard of it, but it came out the year I was born...
I'm more partial to Big Trouble in Little China, myself. ;)
