If you are interested in personal success and self-improvement then it is almost certain that you have seen, or at least heard of, the highly successful movie The Secret.

But do you know that this tremendous high-impact movie was greatly inspired by a book that was written way back in 1912 and lay hidden for decades because it was banned by the Church?

And would you believe that this book was amongst the first to use the phrase Law of Attraction - the term which is very much in vogue today to describe the most powerful force in the universe?

Not only that. Napolean Hill admitted that it was this book that inspired him in writing his world famous success book Think and Grow Rich.

Coming to the more recent times, Bill Gates and other Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are rumoured to have used the techniques revealed in this book to fuel their phenomenal success.

So What Book Is This And Who Wrote It?

Titled The Master Key System, this book was written by Charles F Haanel who was a successful American businessman, thinker and teacher.

In this book Haanel explores everything from how you can create abundance, live a harmonious life to how you can eliminate disease and live a healthy fruitful life.

Instead of dealing with these topics cursorily, Haanel makes each topic clear by explanation, analysis and logic that leaves you feeling confident of achieving your personal goals. Best of all, reading Haanel makes you feel and think good which is the key element for attaining inner harmony and success in life.

Instant Hit

Acclaimed by many to be the greatest book ever written, the Master Key System was an instant hit when it first came out in 1912. It sold 200,000 copies which is a record of sorts for those days.

What propelled the success of the book was perhaps Haanel himself. He had risen from humble beginnings to a man of vast wealth, apparently by applying the principles he taught in the book. To people this was a proof positive that what Haanel wrote was not a bunch of some wooly ideas but something that did work in real life.

Banned By The Church

The book was going strong until 1933 when the Church is said to have banned it.

Such an action of the Church might sound unbelievable today. But remember that the Church has an unsavory past of branding as heresy those ideas and discoveries which were not in agreement with its accepted beliefs and doctrines.

Take for instance the astronomy genius Galileo whom Albert Einstein lauds as the Father of Modern Science. Galileo had to stand trial of Inquisition for his astronomical discoveries in 1633 and placed under house arrest till his death in 1642 at the age of 77.

So it can be easily believed that that the Church may not have taken kindly to what Haanel wrote about workings of the mind and metaphysics in his book.

However the Church had lost teeth by the 20th Century. It couldn't go and put Haanel on trial or send him to jail. As an alternative to do the "righteous thing", the Church might concievably have banned the Master Key System - an action that may still have carried some weight with the devout of those days.

If the Church did ban Haanel's book as is widely believed, Haanel must have suffered considerable monetary loss as the book had proved to be a cash cow for him. But in the long run the Church's action could have had a contrary effect - the saving of the book for posterity!

How Could The Church Have Saved The Book?

If there had been no action from the Church, Haanel's book might have been lost by now as has happened with many old books.

But if the Church did ban it, the result of such an action would be that even those people who didn't know about the book would have come to know about it and become curious. What is in the book that the Church is banning it? Is there some secret or magic in it?

Those who hadn't the book might have tried to get and read it on the sly. Those who had the book must have kept it.

And because some people preserved the original copies of the Master Key System (ban or no ban) that now we are able to read it.

Napoleon Hill's Letter To Hannel

April 21, 1919.

Mr. Charles F. Haanel,St. Louis, Mo.

My dear Mr. Haanel:

You probably know, from the editorial in the January issue of the Golden Rule, copy of which my Secretary sent to you, that I began twenty-two years ago as a coal miner at a dollar a day.

I have just been retained by a ten million dollar corporation at a salary of $105,200.00 a year, for a portion of my time only, it having been agreed that I shall continue as editor of the Hill's Golden Rule.

I believe in giving credit where it is due, therefore I believe I ought to inform you that my present success and the success which has followed my work as President of the Napoleon Hill Institute is due largely to the principles laid down in The Master-Key System.

You are doing a good work by helping people to realize that nothing is impossible of accomplishment which a man can create in his imagination. Surely my own experience proves this.

I shall cooperate with you in getting your course into the hands of the many who so greatly need your message.

Cordially and sincerely,

Napoleon Hill,

Editor, The Golden Rule

Chicago, Illinois

Foreword To The Master Key System- (In part)

Some men seem to attract success, power, wealth, attainment, with very little conscious effort; others conquer with great difficulty; still others fail altogether to reach their ambitions, desires and ideals. Why is this so? Why should some men realize their ambitions easily, others with difficulty, and still others not at all? The cause cannot be physical, else the most perfect men, physically, would be the most successful. The difference, therefore, must be mental - must be in the mind; hence mind must be the creative force, must constitute the sole difference between men. It is mind, therefore, which overcomes environment and every other obstacle in the path of men.

When the creative power of thought is fully understood, its effect will be seen to be marvelous. But such results cannot be secured without proper application, diligence, and concentration. The student will find that the laws governing in the mental and spiritual world are as fixed and infallible as in the material world. To secure the desired results, then, it is necessary to know the law and to comply with it. A proper compliance with the law will be found to produce the desired result with invariable exactitude. The student who learns that power comes from within, that he is weak only because he has depended on help from outside, and who unhesitatingly throws himself on his own thought, instantly rights himself, stands erect, assumes a dominant attitude, and works miracles.

It is evident, therefore, that he who fails to fully investigate and take advantage of the wonderful progress which is being made in this last and greatest science, will soon be as far behind as the man who would refuse to acknowledge and accept the benefits which have accrued to mankind through an understanding of the laws of electricity. Nice hub and great job on identifying this classic work. You might also be intrigued to know there was an even earlier book that first coined the exact phrase "law of attraction"; this book is "Thought Vibrations: Law of Attraction in the Thought World" by William Walker Atkinson and it was published in 1906.

Still the Master Key system is really incredible. Sad that it was banned by the church for empowering readers to create their own destiny and reject the fear-based control of the Dark Ages mentality.

Best wishes on your promotion. I urge your readers to heed your advice and get the Master Key content ASAP!
