The Law of Giving and Receiving In Business
67The law of giving and receiving is very interesting not only from a business standpoint but for life in general. The mentality that the way to have success in business and finances is to horde your resources and cling to everything tightly could not be farther from the truth, based of what I've found studying successful people.
A lot of rich and successful business owners are also giving people, and I definitely believe the two are related. The important thing about it is to not look at it thinking just because they're rich they have the ability to give when other people can't. It's more often the case that the same people gave even when they had very little, and the type of people they became in that process eventually caused wealth and success to come to them.
My husband and I are both Christians, and there is a lot in the Bible on this topic, especially in Proverbs. From a Biblical perspective, God blesses people who are giving not only materially but in the quality of their life. Here's a great example in Proverbs 11:24-26 that pretty much sums up what a lot of people have experienced happen in modern business:
"There is one who scatters, yet increases all the more, and there is one who withholds what is justly due, but it results only in want. The generous man will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered. He who withholds grain, the people will curse him, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it."
If you genuinely develop yourself to the point of being a giving person with your time and money, it comes back to you into your life not only at an equal level but often at a greater level than the effort you put in. A lot of times it comes back indirectly, which is why this isn't something you can just measure on an Excel spreadsheet on how much it's paying off for you. It just doesn't work that way, and the more you put in into a "what's in it for me?" type of frame the less likely it's going to work at all. Your whole attitude about this as a business owner is important.
Coming out of situation where I grew up poor and wanted something better out of life, it has honestly surprised me how much this principle works in business and personal finance. I didn't start going to church on a regular basis until I was 19, and a lot of this seemed very counterintuitive until I actually started living it. If you're new to being a business owner or just want more out of life, I definitely recommend looking more into this concept and how it can change things for you. I know that personally it's had a major impact once I understood it.
