Top grain is the best and most expensive kind of leather. The top of the original hide is considered the top grain. It costs more but that price is made up for in the comfort, quality and durability.

If you'd like to keep costs down, though, look for leather match furniture. This furniture is real leather in the areas that you sit on but on the sides and back, the material is synthetic. The best way to spot this is to look at the back of a leather chair. If there are multiple panels sewn together, it's real leather. If it's one continuous panel, it's probably leather match.

You should also look for hardwood frames with reinforced stress joints. Also be sure that the cushions are made of dense, pure foam double-wrapped in Dacron polyester. These cushions retain their shape the best.

One last thing. Aniline is the dyeing process that shoots color all the way through the leather to insure a uniform appearance throughout. The most durable leathers also have a pigmented top coating that provides greater longevity.
