Psalms 23
1. The Lord is my shepherd;
What is a shepherd? A shepherd is a person who takes care of sheep. A good shepherd will give his life for the sheep that he is caring for. A shepherd is the leader of the flock of sheep.
Who is your shepherd? What is your shepherd? These two questions I ask; not for you to tell me, not to condemn anyone, but to encourage you to really think about this study. To encourage you to think about your relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Lord is my shepherd.
This is a great statement made by a great man of God. If you recall David was anointed to be king over Israel but then what did he do? He went back to being a shepherd. I can imagine David sitting there with the flock at evening contemplating the goodness and greatness of God and coming up with this Psalm. Imagine David sitting there and seeing how great God is by watching the flock that were in his care and thinking of how God watches over all of His sheep.
I shall not want.
God is our provider if we follow His commandments. What more could we actually need if God who is the great Creator of all things seen and unseen? David took care of his sheep providing them all that they needed.
Psalms 23
2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
Lying down in green pastures means that the sheep have eaten their fill. Sheep will not lie down to rest until they are full. God expects us to eat until we are full of His Word then we will lie down for our rest.
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
Sheep do not like raging waters. They are fearful of falling in and being swept away in the current. Wool also absorbs lots of water and that would also help to cause them to drown if they fell in water. Sheep also don't like stagnated water that is old and smelly. They like fresh water that runs gently and thats how God wants us to be also. He wants to give us fresh water daily and for us to trust in Him to bring us to this fresh water.
Psalms 23
3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
He restores me in that He uplifts me when I am down. He encourages me to keep going where he leads for the paths that He leads me to are righteous. He will never lead anyone down the wrong path. God is a good God not an evil one like some would have you to think. God cares for us deeply in that ( But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 ). Even when we were not following the good shepherd the shepherd still sought us out.
Psalms 23
4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
The shepherd leads his sheep to where the grazing is good and at times he will have to lead them through some dark valleys where there are many enemies of the sheep. Wolves, lions and bears inhabited a lot of the wilderness in the time of David watching over the flock and there were times that some of these predators would attack the sheep. But the sheep trusted the shepherd that even though there were predators out there that he would take care of them. The rod was for protecting the sheep from predators and also to push the sheep back into the flock if they were to wander. The staff is curved on the end so that if a sheep was to wander the shepherd would hook the staff around the neck of the sheep and lead it back into the flock.
Psalms 23
5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup Runneth over.
While the sheep would graze where the shepherd led them the enemy would be camped all about the flock seeking a way to get in to cause destruction. Wolves, lions and bears were all around and imagine how they would look at the sheep their mouthes watering then they would see the shepherd and how fear would come upon them. The devil knows who we are in the Lord. He seeks a way to get to us to devour us but then his eyes would turn to our shepherd and he would think if only I could get them away form the flock I could destroy them. It is true that if a sheep is wandering alone that satan will destroy it. There is safety as long as you stay within the flock and not wander about on your own.
Psalms 23
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Goodness and mercy follow the Lords sheep wherever they go. Doesn't it seem like we are looking for goodness and mercy to go before us at times? Or sometimes we will look back trying to see the goodness and mercy behind us? When we look back we are taking our eyes off the shepherd. We are looking from where we came instead of where we are going. Where is it we are going? (and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.)
There are many many shepherds out there in the world that would want us to follow them. Drugs can be your shepherd. Alcohol can be your shepherd. Jealousy, envy, stubbornness, idolatry, pride are all shepherds. But there is only one good shepherd and His name is Jesus Christ. I urge everyone to read and study this and really look inside their own hearts and make sure that Jesus is your shepherd.

Hi Sir Dent -
A great in depth, broken down thorough examination of the psalm! This would make for great sermon material. I love the added touch of the utube song! Keep up the good work!
That You Tube song was written by my Brother in law and he is the one singing it. Thanks so much for the comments.
This is great. Psalm 23 was my grandmother's favorite Psalm. My older brother would read it to her during her last days. You have given us all a great blessing. Thank You. I will pass this forward!
God will provide Great Hub Love the video
amen
I really like this one, good job! He is a faithful and good shepherd!!!!! I was surrounded by darkness on the wrong side of the mountain. He left his 99 well-behaved sheep to come and find me. Thank you Lord, and have mercy!
Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Hub!
As a pastor (now retired) I use this passage for almost every patient going through surgery and then we pray. I find it brings powerful comfort and easies worry and builds faith. thumbs up from a fan!
Thank you everyone for the comments. It is not I but Him that I try to show to everyone.
Thorough explanation of the 23 Psalm. This was always one of my good friend's favorites and I will be sending this hub to her. I really liked it to by the way.
Thanks Sweetie. That's a big compliment to me.
This is one of my favorite hubs here. My friend still talks about how she liked it very much when I sent it for her to read.
I am glad you like it Sweetie. I am also glad your friend likes it. Thanks for letting me know. :)
Thanks very much for this Hub. I will be reading it often. A couple of years ago, our church college had one of the professors translate the prayer from the oroginal language literally and when I heard it, I was in awe. I cannot remember a word of that translation, only the power. Your Hub reminds me of that power.
Thankls Patty for the comment. The power doesn't come from me. The Power is in the Word of God. Keep reading the Word of God and it will keep coming to life for you. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. :)
SirDent: I know it's kinda late but I do not visit the hubs that often. This hub is excellent. I have written a song using Psalm 23 as the lyrics and this hub has inspired me to post the song on the hubs. I would like to invite you to visit my music page on "SoundClick" >> http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID Have a blessed day........secondsamuel
I am also a songwriter Samuel. I have a song for download on lulu.com. It's a free download if you're interested. http://www.lulu.com/content/2254636
Thanks for the read and comment. I appreciate it very much and will check out your song when I have more time.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this hub! It's wonderful and much needed for me today. I wasn't able to go to church today, so this is part of my preaching for the day. I have been up sick all night. And I really needed this. Thanks SirDent. I'm booking marking this one! Keep up His work! I pray for many blessings for you and your family. You deserve it!
Thanks Allshookup for the read and encouraging comment. There is a link to a song I wrote in my above comment, if you are interested in hearing it.
I tried to hear it. It let me hear ......Jesus died on a tree........then it went away. Are you the one singing it?
That is a friend of mine singing it. It needs to be downloaded and saved to your computer. Then you can listen to it all you want.
How do you make Jesus your shepherd? By reading the bible? Is that how? I'm not a Christian, but I'm not interested in a debate, so don't worry about that. I have nothing negative to say towards Christians, though I once did. I'm posting this reply because most of what you said in this hub rings true to me, until you got to the part about making Jesus your shepherd. I've heard this kind of talk my whole life, and even now I am surrounded by it; all of my family members are Christians. I just don't understand what it means to follow Jesus. I mean, where is he? How do you follow him?
I am glad you read this hub Maestro. I wrote another hub about following Jesus. http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-follow-Jesus
Thanks for the read and comment.
I am so glad that we became friends! I think thaat you are a very good Christian writer, This hub is awesome!
Be Blessed!
Thank you Louise for the encouraging comment.

This is very good.
Thank you. ~ eddie
Thanks Eddie as always your comments encourage me to do more for the Lord.
Appreciate the explanation, which is like a fresh drink of God's Word, Thanks
Thank for the read and comment Don. I appreciate it very much.
Wow- what a powerful breakdown of this prayer, especially jumping out at me was the part about NOT looking back and taking your eyes off the shepherd. I was just talking to my husband about that last night, about not dwelling in the past, but looking forward.
Thank you very much for this wonderful hub Sir Dent!
Thank you Dorsi for the wonderful and encouraging comment. It is a blessing to me that others are blessed by what I write, yet it is not I that wrote it but He that sent me.
Great article. what a great translation of one of the most favored scriptures. Thank you for blessing us with your writings. cherylgoff.com
Thank you Psalmist for the comment. I am glad it was a blessing to you.
This is my husbands favorite verse of the Bible! My children have turned it into a song to remember it. It's very powerful! Great explanations, and well written!
Excellent hub on one of my favorite scriptures!
This is my favorite hub k@ri. I am glad you enojoyed reading it and I appreciate your comment.
SirDent, your words about this beautiful Scripture were so meaningful. Thank you for sharing so much of your thoughts and that of the Truth.
I came back again to reread and listen to the song. Your friend sings very well, and I hope his reward is earthly as well as eternal! Thanks again for your hub.
I have often recited the 23 psalm but today it became alive to me. Your hub brought out great points allowing me to look deeper within myself to see if I was really trusting God my shepherd. That you for sharing.
Lisa
Sir Dent, The thought of the Shepard is inspiring and I myself think it is wonderful the way my heart feels at this moment. The Good Shepard leads his Sheep in Green Pastures. He leads them beside still waters he keeps the flock in fold and covers them with his Love! He comes upon them with the slow intention of touching them to give them Peace and to settle down any feelings of jitters that come from anxiety in Life. His Amazing way with the sheep is to be there for them forever and ever Amen!
Thank you for shepherding us through this beloved Psalm. I appreciate the hub. God bless your writing ministry.
sirdent
you have out done yourself on this one! The mighty hand of Jesus was upon you when this was wrote!
God's grace and peace be with you!
As you know you are one of my favorite hubber out here! I love your hubs they are always right on target!!!!
My fellow brother in Christ keep on keeping on! My prayers and support will always be with you!
I appreciate all the positive comments this hub has brought forth. I am sorry that I didn't reply to each one individually, but time has been very short for me.
Thank you for the comment SirDent. I wanted to learn more about your writing style. Glad I came here. Your BIL has a great voice. I'm still trying to figure out how poetry and hubs go together but I guess I'm doing okay?
Thank you for the comment MrsLisa. Poems are generally short and not search engine friendly normally because they are short. One thing I did was put many poems together on a single hub making the hub itself much longer with enough words to be search engine friendly. Some of my peoms are on the page below.
Thank You SirDent, This was absolutely wonderful! It was very enlightening and thought provoking. "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow you..."
This also confirms what I know to be TRUE!
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD.
Blessings
Thank you Deborrah for such an encouraging comment. It is like cool water to me on a hot day.
thank you so much
I loved this teaching about Psalm 23. I want to read more of your hubs and i will. I want to be your fan, and so Im fixing to be. God Bless
