The Philippines Most Brilliant Boxing Star

SEVERAL world-rated boxing stars are now shining luminously in the firmament. These boxing stars originate from places all over the continents such as Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia-Oceania. Their combined lights are so bright that they fill the entire universe with warmth and happiness. Fans, friends and associates, especially their native countries looked up to them with awe, respect and admiration, believing in them as super-humans that's why they are immortalized as heroes.

The Philippines though a dot in the orient seas is proud to have contributed world-renowned pugilists with the likes of Gabriel "Flash" Elorde, Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco, Gerry Penalosa, Bernabe Concepcion, Drian Francisco , Sonny Boy Jaro, Mark Jason Melligen, Nonito Donaire, Brian Viloria, Marvin "Marvelous" Sonsona and a lot of others to the boxing firmament. Presently- however, the most brilliant of them all is no less than MANNY "PACMAN" PACQUIAO. Pacquiao's name is now orbiting in the galazy together with other world's boxers of his calibre.

Manny's name is a by-word- a part of a Filipino household speaking vocabulary, Even a child hearkens upon hearing and pronouncing "Pacquiao". An oddity that can qualify in Guinness Book of World Record happens everytime Pacquiao has a fight. From Aparri to Jolo, virtually all Filipinos are glued to the television to witness "People Champ" Manny Pacquiao pulverize his adversary to smithereens.

Pacquiao"s time in the boxing ring via TV from his entry up to the final bell is the most disciplined time in the Philippines. In fact, Pacquiao is a perfect uniting agent. Top Philippine personalities and authorities of opposing political camps became one as they sat side by side, watching and cheering for Pacquiao. As they do, they forgot meanwhile their political bickerings and personal animosities. During this occasion- too- it isn't surprising to find streets deserted because jeepney and tricycle drivers are among Pacquiao's cheering fans while Pacquiao is hot in pursuit of his foe.  It is even safe to say that during Pacquiao boxing engagement in the ring, crimes such as snatching, hold-up,  robbery,  carnapping, etc. are minimal or none at all as compared to other periods.

Crime perpetrators are also human beings like us. They- too- have their likes and dislikes. They may set aside their nefarious activities for a while to join in the fun and thrill as Pacquiao beats his opponent to pulp.

World-rated boxing stars do collide because of man's machinations. When they do- things good or bad happened. One star wins whose position became stately and shines more brightly while the other star loses and its luster and sheen deminishes.  A world-rated boxing star may have collided a number of times with equally world-rated boxing stars of other lands.  If he emerges victories in majority of his fights- he's rewarded lots of money, titles with prestigious belts.   He gains added benefits like popularity, fame and offers for movies and endorsement of big commercial products.

This is the case of the Philippines most brilliant boxing star: MANNY "PACMAN" PACQUIAO. Let's look at some of his attributes:

(1) Total fights: 54 (2) Wins: 49 (3) Wins by KO: 37 (4) Losses: 3 (5) Draws: 2 (6) Named twice by the Ring Magazine as best pound for pound boxer . (7) 2008 Fighter of the year by the Boxing Writers Association of America. (8) Time Magazines' 100 Most Influential People. (9) 2009 Forbes Magazine Celebrity 100. (10) Undefeated record in 6 weight division, IBO, Ring Magazine Jr. Welterweight Champion, WBC (11) Lightweight Champion from 2008 to 2009. (12) WBC and the Ring Super Featherweight in 2008. (13) The Ring Featherweight Champion in 2003 to 2005. (14) IBF Super Bantamweight Champion from 2001 to 2004. (15) WBC Flyweight Champion in 1998 to 1999.

Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao's boxing star has gone a long way. From a humble donut and balut vendor- besides the strings of boxing world titles he now holds - Pacquiao is now a national figure. I have heard of a move to build his monument, to depict his name and picture in a postage stamp and in one of the Philippine currencies.

His feat and accomplishments in the ring is acclaimed by his countrymen and the world at large. It is known to everybody that he has given a sensational performance in the boxing ring lately. At the age of 30- Pacquiao is a 14 year professional. He is married to Jinkee with 4 lovely children.

On November 14- that is a Saturday- the Philippines most brilliant boxing star- Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao will be made to "collide" with Puerto Rico's Hall of Famer, most famous and top boxing ring drawer star- Miguel Cotto.. The collision-boxing bout will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in a fight card billed: FIRE POWER: Cotto vs. Pacquiao

Both fighters have agreed to settle on 145 pound catchweight. Pacquiao will get 65% share of the PPV buys while Cotto will get 35% share. At stake is Cotto's WBO Welterweight Title. Pacquiao will have to fight Cotto for it.

Whose star will shine the more? Whose will get dimmer?

Unfortunately, I didn't see it live but me and my wife( a filipina) got podcast updates as the fight was progressing. Being able to go up 7 classes without losing stride is amazing. I watched DeLaHoya fight on Tv in philippines but then watched Pacman pummel DeLaHoya in the next fight. I knew after that he was for sure pound-for pound best fighter right now. No question! Now that Cotto got dropped I think there's noone in his weight class left to fight. he has to win 8 titles now to pick up any good opponents.
