The Many Health Benefits Of Chocolate

We're all looking for new ways to improve our health. Unfortunately, it seems all we ever hear is nothing but bad news. However, some new studies are looking a little more positive. Did you know that chocolate can actually be considered a health food? This is great news for those who are looking to take better care of their bodies but also have a sweet tooth with a mind of its own.

What makes chocolate so healthy? The secret to this lies in the ingredients in chocolate, such as cocoa. Cocoa contains phytochemicals, known as flavonoids, which can also be found in red wine and green tea, along with fruits and vegetables. These healthy flavonoids contain powerful antioxidants, which are believed to prevent and sometimes even reverse the damage done by free radicals and toxins.

Chocolate also contains a chemical known as tryptophan. This helpful brain chemical is used to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter with antidepressant qualities. Serotonin also produces feelings of general well being. It is long known that this powerful brain chemical helps to elevate and regulate your moods. So not only is chocolate good for you physically but also mentally, as well!

Did you know eating chocolate candy regularly can help you live longer? Recent studies have shown that lovers of chocolate candy tend to live nearly a year longer than those who don't eat it. Also, men who eat chocolate have a tendency to live longer than those who abstain from it.

You'll also want to eat up some dark chocolate. This delicious treat is believed to contain much more health benefits than any other type of chocolate. The reason for this is pretty simple. Dark chocolate contains a much higher concentration of cocoa to sugar, and since cocoa is the property which holds all those good nutrients, it will obviously have health benefits per ounce than other chocolates.

Chocolate is also a great source for some quick energy. Since it is loaded with carbohydrates, it gives a quick burst of energy shortly after you eat some. I know many of co-workers enjoy a mid-afternoon snack of chocolate as a little pick me up to get through the rest of the work day.

It is also a myth that eating chocolate leads to acne. Acne is a skin condition caused by the over activity of the sebaceous glands. It has nothing to do with chocolate, whatsoever. So all you chocolate loving teens can rest easy and enjoy the many benefits of this delicious, health food.
