The Merry Cemetery from Sapanta - Romania
This cemetery is unique in all the world. Nowhere in the world is there such a place as this Merry Cemetery. The legend goes back to Dacians belief of the inmortal soul.
For them, death was was a moment of happiness because they were to meet their creator " Zamolxe".
The cemetery was created by Stan Loan Petras in 1930. He was a scuptor, painter all rolled into one.
He died in 1977. After his death, his apprentice by the name of Dumitru pop Tincu, carried on with his work.
The crosses are made and painted by hand. The sceenes portray the personality of the desceased...such as an alcoholic, a teacher, carpenter or musician.
Every cross also has a short poem describing the desceased in an ironic or satirical style.
There are more than 800 crosses that constitute a vast archive that preserves, carved in wood, the stories of the people of Săpânţa.

I hope for you, to visit one day the Merry Cemetery from Sapanta.
Nice. It's more a celebration of their lives rather than mourning their death. Which it should be if they lived a good life.
Thanks
Mike
