Notes on the fridge: 10 years of news you can chew
Nothing else has revived the public interest in board games than Monopoly. From 1935, the board game has entertained each generation until today. It is now recognized as the most commercially successful board game not only in the United States but all over the world.
This well loved board game concentrates on money management and the owning of properties. The original version of Monopoly concentrated around Atlantic City, New Jersey. The properties revolve in known streets of the city wherein the higher valued properties of the game are the locations in Atlantic City that had high demand while those properties with lower values represent the slums or bad locations of the city.
Players travel around the board and gets opportunities to purchase properties. If a player lands on an owned property then the player must pay rent to the owner. The rent increases as the owner buys more properties of the same color group and builds houses or hotels in them. There are also cards that give you directions to “go to jail” or give you luck such as getting cash.
The game ends when everyone else is bankrupt and one stands as the winner. Since the game can run for hours and even days – you can place a time limit in the game and the richest player can be declared as the winner.
Monopoly began with Charles Darrow who began making the game in his home and selling them to friends and family. He did not expect the popularity of the game to grow and soon the demand for the game was beyond his means. He then approached Parker Brothers but was rejected due to design errors. Darrow did not lose hope and continued making the game by hand and became very successful. Parker Brothers soon caught up with the popularity of the game and bought the rights to it.
Ever since then, monopoly has played a part in every childhood and indoors gathering, entertaining kids and adults. Anyone can recognize Rich Uncle Pennybags the game’s mascot who is also referred to as Mr. Monopoly.
Since its release, the game has seen a lot of variations and themes to support everyone’s interests. You can now purchase monopoly boards that revolve on sports, movies, colleges, world wide setting and many more. The different versions have helped broaden the market and appeal of Monopoly as a board game.
