The Moors are still merrier in Majorca

It's interesting to note how many island cultures have evolved over the centuries as a direct result of hosting a variety of occupying powers. Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands is a prime example. Not long after the birth of Christ, the Romans took over control under Quintus Balearicus (hence Balearics). Then the Vandals from eastern Germany occupied the island as part of their assault on the whole Roman Empire. Eventually the island attracted the attention of the Moors from North Africa and their lasting legacy was the introduction of irrigation to Majorcan agriculture. It wasn't until 1229 that the Spanish finally assumed control following an invasion by King James the 1st of Aragon.
Nowadays, the only vandals that visitors are likely to encounter are possibly a few lager louts who sometimes get out of hand in their Magaluf enclave while the Moors are likely to be a respectable family from Surrey staying at the more upmarket resort of Puerto Pollensa.
Whatever your taste in holidays, there is somewhere for everyone in Majorca. The young clubbers will still find plenty to keep them occupied in both Magaluf and Palma Nova but the rest of the island is ideal for families looking for a relaxing island holiday which doesn't involve a much longer flight to the Canaries or the Eastern Mediterranean.
Self catering is still the preferred option for families staying on the island and one of the best selections can be found at the family run agency, Mallorca Holidays Direct.
