The Morning Miracle
It was very early one morning long ago. I had a job a hundred miles away to protect a refinery during a strike. I was a guard lieutenant. and part time police officer. All I did was work day and night, and I was always very tired from working long hours.
My wife and baby were still sleeping. I did not want to wake them up so I was very quiet. If the baby would have heard me she would have cried so I tried to be as quiet as possible.
It was three o'clock in the morning. It would take me a while to get ready and also to make a few brown bag sandwiches. Slowly and quietly I tried to move around the house but the baby was wise to my getting up early and I began to hear her crying.
The baby started crying louder. She wanted to get up out of bed so I told my wife Jo Ann to put Becky on the sofa and to sit her up. As everyone knows by now, my daughter can not walk. As a baby she did not have any sitting balance so Jo Ann sat Becky up with some pillows helping to balance Becky because Becky wanted to sit up in a sofa chair.
Becky watched me as I ate a quick sandwich. I asked Jo Ann if her and Becky were hungry and she said they would be going back to bed as soon as I left. I kissed my wife and the baby good by. I told Becky that when daddy had a day off coming, we would all go shopping. I gave Becky a sweet hug and Jo Ann one too and told them both to get back into their warm bed.
It was very cold outside. I had the car warming up to melt some ice off the windshield and that morning I was thinking about Deer. I never saw wild deer in my life. I thought about it. In all my years I never saw a wild buck ever. It was a passing though. I did not make much of it, but I did say out loud, " Dear God before I leave this earth I would like to see a wild buck or wild deer." And then I got into my car and began to leave the yard to drive to work.
As I was driving along there was ice everywhere. There was ice on the road too. I drove slowly and carefully and as I was passing by the old saw mill I looked by the side of the road and for the first time in my life I saw a doe. It did not have horns. It looked like a doe.
Carefully I drove on the highway, and then the doe walked right in front of my car. It looked straight into my eyes as I looked straight into her eyes. The animal was afraid. It's hoofs were slipping on the icy highway. I was glad there were no cars behind me as I eased on my brakes.
I definitely did not want to hit the animal with my car. I simply waited until the doe was able to cross the road before I continued to drive on.
Indeed the beautiful creature stood there and looked straight at me. She was a pretty large animal. I wondered if it would be O.K.
When it reached the other side of the highway it stopped to turn back to look at me even longer as I passed it on by. In my rear view mirror I saw the doe disappear into the forest.
What a surprise that was to see. Never in my life had I ever mentioned a doe, a deer or a buck until that morning, and mentioned it to God.
I worked a strike for seventy two days straight to protect a refinery just in case there was trouble. That doe I saw was thirty years ago. I have not seen a wild one again since that time. I never needed too. I had already seen one, thanks to our good Lord in Heaven.
God Bless You. May his angels protect you now and forever. And this little short narrative was absolutely the truth.

Dear Putz Ballard: Thank you for dropping by this morning. I too feel the same way.All I ever wanted to do was to just see one and God made that possible. God Bless You Sir and have a great week.
What a coincidence. I'm just in the process (as I type) of finishing a hub about animals and comforting experiences. It must have been wonderful to see that deer. Such a lovely hub.

Dear itakins: Thank you for writing Dear Heart. So happy you can see those lovely creatures all the time. They do not stand a chance in our area. They are hunted.
The one I saw was a Doe. It is against the law to hunt Does I think.
Anyhow I was glad to see one, but concerned over it's survival. It was an icy morning and I hope it faired well for a meal, but I guess they eat certain types of grass. God Bless You.
Dear jesusmyjoy: What an interesting identification, jesusmyjoy. Thank you for writing. I would love that, to be able to have them in my yard. We have rabbits and squirrels. They kind of stay around us for protection. Thank You for visiting Dear Heart.

Great hub! We have deer in our area of WNC and occasionally I will see them and some wild turkeys as well. there is nothing like seeing these beautiful animals and have offered a suggestion to my deer hunting frineds, maybe the best way to hunt deer is with a 35mm camera.
