The shape and size of your nose is genetic. By the age of 16, you nose is generally fully developed. Rhinoplasty may be performed if you are unhappy with the natural shape and size of your nose. It may also be done to restore the shape of your nose after an injury. Generally, Rhinoplasty is safe surgical procedure. For most people, the benefits in terms improved appearance are greater than any disadvantages.

Which Nose Fits You?

It is crucial that you identify first what you dislike about the appearance of your nose and that you are able to explain this to your surgeon. Your cosmetics surgeon will then be able to tell you what is possible with rhinoplasty surgery and what is not.

Reduction Rhinoplasty

In Reduction Rhinoplasty, the goal is to make the nose appear smaller. In this procedure, the cosmetic surgeon makes cuts inside the nostrils to reach the bone and cartilage. The shape of the nose will then be created by partially removing and re-shaping the bone and cartilage. The skin over the nose is left untouched and due to its elasticity, it can be shrinks down to the new shape.

Making the nose smaller and narrower may mean it is also necessary to make your nostrils smaller. This is done by making further cuts in the skin of the nostrils, which leave fine scar on each side. To know if you may need this procedure, it is advisable to consult your cosmetic surgeon first before undergoing surgery.

Augmentation Rhinoplasty

In contrast with Reduction Rhinoplasty, Augmentation Rhinoplasty aims to build up the nose. The cosmetics surgeon makes a cut inside or between the nostrils and re-shapes the bone. Additional bone cartilage may be taken from the hip, a rib, the back of elbow, the surface of the skull. This is called a bone graft. If cartilage is used it may be taken from the ears, or a spare cartilage inside the nose. Sometimes artificial implants are used.

The skin over the nose will not probably be cut as it stretches over the new shape. After surgery, the cuts inside or between the nostrils will be closed up with dissolvable stitches. The nose may be filled with surgical packing to help control any bleeding.

The Expectations

Before surgery, a validation the patient’s medical history will be made and you will have a full examination, including checks on the heart and lungs. The nose will be examined and its shape and size will be measured. Normally, a photograph of the face will be taken before the operation, so that the results of surgery can be compared with the original appearance.

To minimize the risk of infection after surgery, make sure that the patient is free from coughs, colds or sore throat at the time of the operation. If there’s any more concerns, the surgeon shall be contacted for advice.

At the hospital, patient shall be asked to sing a consent form. This confirms of his/her understanding on the procedures and given permission to the surgeon to proceed with the surgery.

If the patient is having a general anaesthetic, fasting instructions must be closely followed. Usually, patient must not eat or drink about six hours before a general anaesthetic. However, some anaesthetists allow occasional sips of water until two hours beforehand.

The Ideal Candidate

First, know your motivation and purpose. If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your nose or if you experience problems with breathing through your nostrils, you may be a candidate for rhinoplasty. In terms of age and condition, the best candidates will be at least 15 years old and in good health and mental condition.

Once you’ve determined your purpose and the goal you want to achieve, ask yourself if you are willing to undergo a surgical procedure and the associated recovery to improve the appearance or function of your nose. If your answer is yes, then the next step is to ask your cosmetic surgeon if surgery can achieve the new look you desire. During your initial consultation, you can openly discuss with your doctor your expectations and concerns regarding the procedure. Rest assured that with a full-fledged cosmetic surgeon, you can expect an honest assessment of what rhinoplasty surgery can do for you.

Recovery from Surgery

Painkillers will be given to help relieve any discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off. In day cases, most people go home after recovering from the anaesthetic. With general anaesthetic, however, you will need to arrange for a friend or relative to drive you home and stay with you for the next 24 hours.

You will have dressings in each nostril for about a day, which will prevent you from breathing through your nose. Keep your head up as much as possible; avoid hot baths and alcohol; and avoid blowing your nose.

There will be some bruising and swelling, particularly around your eyes. Difficulty in breathing through your nose should ease as the swelling settles. Your nose will also feel numb and stiff. The numbness will disappear slowly over the next few months but the stiffness is likely permanent.

Lastly, you will probably feel more comfortable taking some time off from work returning when the bruising has disappeared.

The procedure looks painful. I guess that's the price you have to pay to look beautiful.

I'm sure it's more painful after operations. You're right that's the prize. No pain, no gain applies ;)
