The Original DOOM An Historic Milestone in Computer Games
60
The original DOOM. This game made history in so many ways that few people can even think to discuss them all. One thing is for sure. DOOM was probably responsible for the "upgrade fever" that gripped technology from the mid 1990s through to the end of the Pentium line of x86 CPUs. Anyone upgrading their computer around that time was probably doing it at least partially so they could run DOOM faster.
The original DOOM ran very well on the 486DX and the original Soundblaster 16. It is the game that made everyone upgrade their 386 CPUs and buy their first sound cards. Nearly every game after that was written to the same specifications, and the standard was set.Everyone who is a fan of computer games has a story about how they finally managed to beat this or that level in DOOM. This game influenced the development of just about every game that followed it in some way, yes, even Halo 3, and it was a spectacular commercial success, even by today's standards, given there were no multi-million dollar marketing budgets or television commercials for it.Share it! — Rate it: up down [flag this hub]
