There are things we need to do to get our kids ready for back to school that does not involve clothes or school supplies. They are the things that deal with the physical and emotional changes that have occurred with are children as they have grown over the summer.
Talk to your child about how they feel about going back to school. Were there issues you missed noticing last year? Did they have problems with bullies or keeping up in a certain class? Talk about the problems they had last year and try to come up with solutions they can implement for a better school year this year. If it is a serious issue with them being able to comprehend a certain subject or deal with on going bullying seek the school’s help in solving the problem.
This is the best time of year to do your well child check up. If your child is planning on playing sports be sure to take the release forms to the doctor with you. Get any releases or notes about medication your child will be taking at school to this doctor’s visit. Don’t forget to check if they are up to date on vaccines. Most schools check and you do not want your child sent home from school because they are not properly vaccinated.
Inquire about the sports or instructional activities that your child plans to participate in both in and out of school. Figure out if you have the money for lesson fees and equipment before you give your ok for your child to participate. If your son is planning on playing flag football and, you do not have them money for the equipment he will start the school year with a chip on his shoulder. Be honest with your kids about your economic limitations in this time of recession.
Lastly, schedule an appointment with the eye doctor and dentist. This way you will not have to schedule appointments on school days for dental care and can nip any I can not see the chalk board issues in the bud. Again don’t promise your child contacts or invisible braces if they are out of your price range. It is better for them to prepare for the “metal mouth” and “four eye” lines then think they will be getting something they are not.
