Helpmate or Passenger

Just a rider or a perfect passenger?

Definitely a watcher for obstacles, good righthand.

Sitting on the right hand side.

Is it better to have a woman as a 4wheeling passenger, spotter, general hand to the driver person or is a man better?

To explore this question, is the purpose of this article.

From experience being both in the lefthand or drivers position and in the righthand passenger position, it is a little discouraging to realise that it really doesn't matter where you sit, it boils down to the person.

So rather than pick a woman over a man or a man over a woman let's look at the specific requirements that make the perfect 4wheeling passenger.

Anticipate the needs of the driver.

A good righthand has that bottle of water ready to pass over when you are thirsty. Knows when to grab that sandwich away from you, grabs the CB to talk to another 4wheeler, changes the radio station, or to just be still and watch.

Watch for obstacles.

A driver can't see the opposite side of the vehicle and any obstacles, unexpected pointy limbs, shear rock drops but a good righthand can and should. What's the point of having a righthand if it is only good for passing you stuff and grabbing stuff?

Backup Driver.

A good driver as a righthand man is a helpful thing. If you get tired, need someone to move the rig, a fresh perceptive on the trail you chose, and can offer an opinion on which way is the better way. Handy, but not necessarily required.

Some of my best guys have been youngsters, girls & boys that really know the ins and outs because they have watched for all those years growing up.

Extra Bonus Qualities

Having a non-judgmental mechanic is a great bonus, not required but a bonus. A person you can talk to & with, a big plus. Better yet, a person you can laugh with. Someone that can really spot a good line through the rocks. A person that knows where the front diff and rear diff are on your vehicle. And last but certainly not least, a helpmate, someone that loves 4wheeling just as much as you do.

It's all about the attitude!
