Flan, What Is It

Flan, a perfect creamy custard desert that dates back to ancient Rome. Flan is a French name that stands for Creme Carmel. Flan spread all over the European countries before coming to Latin American and then it travelled North America. Christoper Columbus is believed to have brought Flan to the Americas.

My wife is a big lover of Creme de Flan, in our travels to Central America we find that Flan has many different recipes. We will be sharing some of them later in this Hub. Have you ever thought about Pumpkin Flan or how about Orange Almond Flan just to mention a couple.

I hope you enjoy this hub.

The Perfect Flan

So what is flan

Flan is a baked custard often made with eggs, cream or milk, gelatin and vanilla. Often Flan served in Latin countries or restaurants does not have the caramel sugar layer, but instead is simply plain, more resembling Italian Cream. Sometimes Latin American restaurants make the distinction between regular flan and dolce de leche.

Flan enjoys great popularity in the US, in Latin American countries, and in the Philippines. It is also very popular in Japan, where some variants may be made with soymilk, since many native Japanese do not regularly consume cow milk.

Flan is usually served chilled, and care must be taken to refrigerator it, because of its milk and egg contents. For many, flan represents the essence of comfort food.
