Hair! Beautiful Hair!

Most people with long hair grew it gradually from an early age to the present. I do not know anyone who woke up one morning shocked to find themselves tangled in their own tresses, though I suppose it could happen... I have had long hair for most of my life and have developed a great way to brush it out. By brushing it this way, you can minimize retangling, because who wants that?

Before you begin, however, there are a few things that you will need. Here is your list of supplies:

  1. Very wet hair.
  2. Hair clips.
  3. An open toothed brush and comb. Due to the prolonged exposure to water, it is best to use plastic rather than wooden brush and comb.
  4. A deep bowl of water. I have found that a mixing bowl works well.
  5. A spray bottle filled with water.
  6. Leave in conditioner. This is optional and any brand that you like is fine.
  7. A towel. I like the large and fluffy kind. I tend to use 'bathsheets'.
  8. A mirror. This is optional.
  9. A comfortable place to sit with good clearance and a place to arrange your supplies.
  10. A good chunk of time. This is not a quick process, by any means.

It is important that you work only on hair that is wet. This will be a problem as time passes and is the reason for the bowl or water and the spray bottle.

Once you have your supplies in order, you are ready to begin.

  1. Divide your hair into sections and clip them out of the way.
  2. Wrap the towel about your shoulders. You can pin it into place, if you wish.
  3. Dip the comb or brush into the bowl of water and leave it there for now.
  4. Starting at the ends, gently work out the larger tangles with your fingers.
  5. Use the spray bottle to wet your hair again.
  6. Take the brush or comb out of the water and shake off the excess moisture.
  7. Once more starting at the ends, brush the hair with gentle top-down motions. Each pass of the brush should begin an inch or so higher on the locks than the pass before. Do not be surprised if it takes many passes before each length is tangle free.
  8. Apply a small amount of leave in conditioner and wind it gently together, taking care to keep the strands smooth.
  9. Clip it out of the way and unclip the next section.
  10. Repeat until all of your hair has been brushed.
  11. Gently unclip all of the sections and shake them out, fluffing them with your fingertips lightly.
  12. Collect all the hair into one hand and, again starting from the bottom, brush out the entire mass.

Voila! Beautiful, tangle free hair.

Ah, the joys of long hair
