Poem as really short story

Pets. They are the backbone of a happy society! There are many animal people I had the pleasure of loving over the years. I told you I was full of pet stories and this one is a very short story told in poem form.

They keep us amused; they steady us back to balance. They cause us to laugh out loud at their antics; they keep us sane in a chaotic world. You have only to watch a pet food ad on TV to learn the obvious about modern society: They demand and we answer the call.

This little story is simple in form and the telling but long on the message: Pets know when we are stressed and take measures to balance us.  That, and you know you are really in trouble when your pet cat lays dibs on owning the couch.  So, what's his password?  Read on.

Who said it had to be a long story? Use the idea of poetry form for a really really short story! Enjoy! And, yes, this is a fast easy read.

The Pet Chronicles: Curty and His Couch

Bar room

Bouncer,

Burly,

Heavily

Muscled,

Pale gold

Tiger cat

His is The

Curty Cartier.

Speaking

Loudly

To

His Persons:

Come

Join

Me!

His Persons,

Glancing

Across

The room,

Busy

In

The kitchen:

Will you

Look at that!

They exclaim.

He

Thinks

It’s

His couch!

Curty,

High pitched,

Squeaks,

He’s

A

Tenor,

Invites

Again:

Watch TV

With me,

Won’t you?

Pleasing

Cat smile

Wide.

His Persons,

Loudly

Huffing

And,

Just a bit

Indignant:

Whose couch

Is this anyway?

This cat

Is really

Something!

Curty,

Sweetly,

Oh,

So agreeably,

Persistent insistent:

I need some company!

Come sit with me,

He implores.

You know

You need

To pet me!

His Persons,

Giving

Curty

The

Stern and

Disapproving

Eye:

Whose

Couch

Is it, Curty?!

Curty,

Sweet faced,

With big eyes

Lifted up

To greet

His Persons:

My couch!

His Persons do not yet understand Curty's motives

His Persons,

Now really,

Truly annoyed:

Whose

Couch

Is it,

Big Guy?

Curty,

Smiling,

Thinking

His Persons

Are playing

A fun game:

My couch!

He answers back.

His Persons,

totally

Exasperated:

Whose

Couch

Is it,

After all,

Cat!?

Curty,

Yawning

Widely,

Stretching out

His long body,

Flexing

His

Ferocious

Menacing

Claws,

Oh,

So relaxed:

It’s

My

Couch!

Blinking slowly,

Confident,

I

Thought

You

Already

Knew

That!

His Persons,

Worn

Down,

Shrugging

Their

Shoulders,

Resigned,

Starting

To

Smile

In

That

Moment,

Look

At

Each

Other

In agreement:

OK,

It's

Curty’s

Couch!

Curty smiled

As he saw

His Persons

Approach

His couch:

I

Just

Knew

You

Would see

Things

My way.

Now,

Don’t

Forget

To massage

My paws

After you

Settle in and

Get yourselves

Nice and

Comfortable

With me.

I purr

really nice,

Don’t

You think?

Aren’t

You glad

You

Joined me

On

My couch?

We are all

Having

Such

A

good

Time.

Curty,

Smiling,

I know I am.

Remember this pet proverb: Pets keep us in our place – right where they want us – filling the food bowl and changing the TV channels.

*** For another even more amusing pet poem, this one about a Greyhound dog who is quite the cad in the romance department, enthralling every woman who meets him, read: Writing Love Poetry: Part 2. The poem is called: The Interesting Man.

Hi, G-Ma, thanks for stopping by for a visit! I see you know Curty's sister - they must have some Siamese in them for he too is quite the talker and follower as well! and yes, too, all those places - guess it's a protector thing as they think you might be vulnerable while indisposed. :)

Denny, this brought a smile to my face. We have two cats who both rule the roost around here. What USED TO BE our favorite chair and ottoman is now owned by Dusty. Peaches often wakes me up at night when she decides to "groom" my hair by licking it. Most often one or the other is on the desk with me while I am TRYING to see the computer screen. I can get them to lie down by brushing them or if I REALLY want the space for myself, I can always haul out the nail clipper. That gets them off of the desk! Ha!

Hi, Peggy W, thanks for stopping by for a little grin of the day!  I gave up worrying about who owns what around here a long time ago.  Though we get tired of the pet hair I've taken to putting a top sheet over my bed comforter so it's easy to wash and wash often.

Chairs get towels purchased just for the feline crowd.  These days they get picky and change sleeping places if I don't change the towels every couple of days.  They are characters, aren't they?  I love my pets.

My husband and I have begun plotting how we can teach them to vacuum, sweep and wash.  We've even contemplated getting them to wash the dishes instead of us.

Sometimes, in the middle of the night the cats check on us by getting on the bed, standing on our chests, staring at us nose to nose with their whiskers tickling.  Interestingly enough, they tend to wake me up when I'm not breathing well.  Quite the little helpers.

Sometimes, the humidity is so high here in Louisiana that it just locks up the oxygen in the air making it more effort to breathe well - especially when you've had pneumonia several times like I've had.  That's when it's best to get up, exercise a little and then back to bed.

Then Leonardo The Love Bandit cuddles up under my arm and next to my heart; it isn't long before live-cat-as-teddy-bear has us both passed out in a deep sleep.  Then my husband wakes up and says, "Hey! Hold it down over there!  You two are snoring the rooftops off!"  It wasn't me; blame the cat. :)

The poem is refreshing and the proverb is hilarious, now truly that speaks the truth.:)
