If not for my techie husband, I would never even have heard of the PlayStation Portable (PSP). And the main reason he wanted to get one in the first place, was not so that he could play games wherever he went, but so he could store all of his and our daughter's MP3 and MP4 files in one portable place. We discovered, however, having one PSP was not enough for our family and so we bought another - one for him and one for our daughter.

I was a little skeptical at first that we needed two of them, but after discovering all of its amazing features, I now know we can't' live without them.

What Exactly is a PSP?

You know what a PlayStation is, right? A PSP is just a portable version that you can take with you wherever you go. There are games that come in the forms of little discs that you can play on it, or you can download games onto the PSP from your computer. The control buttons on the PSP are almost identical to those on the PlayStation controller. The only difference being, the PSP does not have the little knobs. Another feature of the PSP is that it has WiFi so you can play against other players over the Internet.

The PlayStation 3 and the PSP are designed to "talk" to one another. There is also a feature called "remote play" in which a program can be running on the PlayStation 3's hard drive, let's say a game, but you are not in the same room as the Playstation 3. You can still play the game from your Playstation 3 on your PSP, completely wirelessly. Don't ask me how this works, I still have a hard time wrapping my head around all the techie stuff, so I just stick to the basics.

Music and Videos

Like I said earlier, we didn't get the PSP for gaming but instead purchased it in order to have portable power for our music and videos, especially for our daughter. It came in very handy when we had to make a 500 mile trip (one way) to Rochester, Minnesota. Our daughter was able to take all of her favorite videos and music along with her to watch and listen to on the road and in our hotel. Something else cool about the device is that you can download photos and wallpapers. My husband then made a slide show so she had something interesting to watch while listening to her music.

There are different sizes of memory cards you can purchase for the PSP from 2 to 32gb.

The PSP also has over 430 videos, movies and TV programs on UMD (Universal Media Disc). You can also download videos onto the PSP from the Internet. Another way to get your favorite movies onto your PSP is to download the DVD on your computer, convert it into an MP4 file and download it onto your PSP.

Other Features

The latest PSP - the PSP 3000, has a a built-in microphone which allows you to use Skype without needing a headset. The PSP weighs just over a pound and it's screen size is 4.3 inches wide and can also be hooked up to your television. (There is a protective screen cover that is sold separately and is nice to have).

If you have TiVos Series2 connected to your network at home you can also use the PSP to watch recorded TV.

The WiFi option you can access the Internet via any where that offers WiFi service.

All in all, whether you are a techie or not, I highly recommend this product!
