The Popularity Of Conspiracy Theories Online
63
Simply googling the term Most Popular Conspiracy Theories returns more than five and a half million results, someone is clearly busy putting content on the web about conspiracies. What exactly does this mean though? Is everybody convinced that someone is 'out to get them', the whole world is completely paranoid and requires outlandish theories to maintain their last ounce of sanity? The main problem with approaching this particular issue is that it generates a lot of hostility, a lot of the google searches place emphasis on derogatory comments and words in the results returned. Each result only returns about fifteen to twenty words of text yet many contain words that can be directly described as hostile, this assumes of course that in the first place you feel neutral about the the phrase 'conspiracy theory'. With the term 'conspiracy theory' used almost exclusively with skepticism and ridicule if begs the question "are the publishers of online conspiracy reviews biased?"
With so many of the top conspiracy sites actually being dedicated to bashing such silly nonsense it cannot explain its popularity. There must be some reason as to why so many sites choose to spend time effort and not inconsiderable amounts of money pointing out flaws in the arguments of others. There is a simple truth behind these debunking sites, it is quite simply the easy option. Its a lot harder to assert that a controversial attitude or hypothesis is justifiable, any argument that challenges the status quo makes a lot of people uncomfortable. When you hear 'conspiracy theory' used in a documentary or news program it involves dismissing an idea without investigation. I'm not saying you are ignorant if you refute a conspiracy claim, I am saying however that investigation first is required to form a reasonable opinion on the subject. If you asked me if it was possible to maintain constant geostationary orbit around the earth with a satellite required to jettison a pay load over three stages altering its overall mass by thirty four point four percent I would say 'I don't know'. Would my answer still be same if I was first told it was the corner stone of a conspiracy theory. To make the discussion of the feasibility of such an event subject to an army of rabid and hostile debunkers would likely result in a fiasco. The status quo is returned to following the successful attack on the individual concerned, the debunkers can safely sleep at night knowing that no reports of any credible conspiracy exists. There is of course one major problem with this approach, the very secrecy that is required for a conspiracy to be successful is maintained, these self appointed gate keepers of freedom are in fact suppressing free speech.
Do debunkers actually take on loonies that threaten our way of life or merely attack weak individuals who cannot capably form a reasoned opinion. Back to the google search and look for some answers. A hot topic at the moment is the swine flu pandemic, there have been some disturbing reports about the safety of the H1N1 vaccine. Basically conspiracy theorists say there are dangerous substances in these vaccines, that they are ineffective and cause more harm than good. Firstly the swine flu 'pandemic' is of far less significance with regard to numbers than any seasonal flu outbreak, it is also much less deadly in terms of deaths caused. Many politically influenced individuals have stepped up to say that, and I quote Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer "so you can choose not to be immunized and take a gamble or you can protect yourself with a high degree of certainty with a safe product." One slight problem here is that thimerosal, an ingredient used in the vaccine is 49% mercury by weight, this is a highly questionable compound. Squalene is a naturally occurring oil which is also found in the vaccine, it is also found in the nervous system and the brain of the human body. Sounds safe enough, in fact you have probably eaten this compound in the form of olive oil and benefited from this nutritious food. The problem occurs when you by pass the normal route of ingestion by injecting it directly, here the bodies own immune system recognise this threat and seeks out and attacks it. This results in the bodies own nervous system being attacked, this has been linked with Gulf War Syndrome and other debilitating autoimmune diseases. Polysorbate 80 another ingredient and it is basically a detergent, it is used in the medical field regularly. Researchers like it because it has the ability break open cells, it also promotes tumors. Observed side effects include altered heart function, blood brain barrier can be weakened and penetrated, seizures, reduced fertility and death. Polysorbate 80 is known to cause cancer in animals. If you are in any doubt as to the safety of the vaccine obtain a list of the ingredients and google search each to identify its known properties.
