The Price Of Political Truth
54"BUY THE TRUTH AND SELL IT NOT." Those words were uttered by a man
moved by the Holy Spirit of God, a man endowed with more wisdom than
anyone in history except for the fleshly embodiment of Wisdom and
Truth, Jesus Christ. This man, Solomon, inspired by the King of
Nations, spoke these words in his capacity as earthly King of Israel,
for anyone having ears to hear. What he desires to teach us can,
unfortunately, be learned not only from the heights of Solomon's
success, but the depths of his failures as well, all because he sold
the Truth of God for that which was woefully lacking in spiritually
enduring substance.
Looking around the political landscape of the United States and the
season of political maneuvering just entered, I can't help but notice
eerie similarities between Solomon and those supposedly aligned with
Jesus Christ engaged in the same process of selling the truth to the
highest political bidder. Whether they are referred to as The
Religious Right, Religious Conservatives, Reagan Democrats,
Compassionate Conservatives, etc. doesn't really matter. Those who
name the name of Jesus and are noticed as possessing political value
are constantly being bombarded with offers of power, acceptance and
social change in exchange for political commitment. In spite of this
decades long dance, the followers of Jesus still follow the lead of
those adept at political romantic tease. Why is this so? Why have the
professed followers of the Savior of the Universe been proven to be
inept and anemic when it comes to the capture and exercise of the
World's political power?
To answer this question, lets' first ask another, more foundational
question. To do that, let's return to a man who rhetorically posed
the same fundamental question, Pontius Pilate. In complete irony,
this Roman ruler framed the question, "What is truth?" shortly before
Jesus was crucified, never quite understanding that he spoke face to
face with Truth. Regardless of the degree of sincerity Pilate
exhibited in asking the question, it is one which would serve us well
to not only ask, but also to answer, at least partially. Just a
matter of hours before Pilate asked "What is truth," Jesus revealed
the answer to us in His prayer to His Father. He stated, "Thy word is
truth." He then prays for His Father to "Sanctify them through thy
truth." So Jesus reveals to us, not only the means, but the standard
by which we are set apart for His purpose in this World, the Word of
God, the Truth. Therein lies the means to conduct life on earth for
all who would know, even those desiring to learn the conduct of
political life as a Child of God.
Truth reveals that we are ambassadors on this earth for the King of
Nations. Truth also reveals that we will one day reign with our King
and actually judge this world and angels. For a group with such a
glorious future, we seem to be enamored with the idea that we can
usher in that reality for ourselves. Confusion has arisen between the
authority structure ordained by God as revealed in Scripture and the
duties and responsibilities delegated to us by our King. Instead of
representing the risen Lord of Glory to a lost and dying World, we
seem compelled to seek the World's nod of approval for our high
Christian morals and ideals. Meanwhile, the World continues their
rebellious march toward the gates of hell while miserable servants of
God wonder why their tireless political efforts and compromises have
been ignored. The solution? More political effort. And the downward
spiral into the deceptively alluring and corrupt world of the rulers
of evil continues. A descent into a world never meant for the
righteous until the appointed time, and with Jesus Christ leading the
way.
Therein lies the reason for failure and weakness of the people of God
in the political realm; it is not meant for them until the literal and
physical return of Jesus Christ to this earth. In the meantime, the
Body of Christ constitutes a separate political body from the World
and, therefore, is responsible for exercising unique political duties
originating from the throne of the King of Nations. As Ambassadors for
our King, we have been entrusted with the most compelling political
message of our time, the "Glorious Gospel" of Jesus Christ! This
message is meant to be delivered to the World by those living a
conspicuously separate lifestyle from the World, all according to our
King's gracious New Covenant Law.
In living this lifestyle which works out our salvation for all to see,
the truth is not only bought, but is not sold. Precious is this truth
that is lived out from our hearts through the enabling of the Holy
Spirit. These actions reveal our assessed value of truth purchased. On
the other hand, when those reckoned to have the mind and wisdom of
Christ start walking with the unwise to obtain that which is fleeting,
destruction awaits them. The only question to be determined is one of
timing. When will this destruction come?
After more than thirty years of zealously trying to restore the mirage
of Biblical heritage cast by the inheritors of Ancient Roman glory
known as the Founding Fathers of the United States, professors of Jesus
Christ in America need to wake up and realize the same thing Solomon
did later in his active life, that it was all vanity. The demonic
mysteries of realms unknown, the temptations of temporary power and the
allure of unholy political marriages held nothing but devastation for
him and his country. This selling off of his vast portfolio of truth
simply magnified the fullness of abiding with holy, just and eternal
Yahweh. Such is the value of eternally enduring Truth not sold!
