The Real Housewives of Atlanta
74It's like watching a trainwreck...
I must admit I am a reality TV show junkie and I love the entertainment of it all, but sometimes (shaking my head) I really am appalled at some of the depictions I see on television. I will admit out of all of the "housewife shows" I really have enjoyed The Real Housewives of Orange County, The Real Housewives of New York City, and of course The Real Housewives of Atlanta; however being a Atlanta native and being black watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta is like watching a train wreck. On one hand you want to stop looking at the show because you are embarrassed at how the so called black affluent women are acting, but then NeNe says, "Kim you and your wig get out of my laugh.", and just as you pick yourself off the floor for laughing so darn hard you realize that you have been sucked into this sick mess. I will say that these "Housewife Shows" are really a poor depiction of any house wife of any state, country, continent, or island. I have decided to break down each character in my own words.
Lisa Wu Hartwell
Lisa to me has potential to be a sweet person. I think she often gets caught up in the drama of the other housewives. I don't think she is a true housewife because she works. She has apparently 4 jobs ( she's a broker, she paints, she has a baby line of clothes, and a jewelry line). As a matter of fact her husband could have done the Househusband Reality Show. Now back to the jobs we all know that this economy is in the dumps despite Lisa being a broker, so with that we know no one is selling houses as a matter of fact everyone is trying to keep the one they have i.e why everyone is restructuring, and trying to do loan modifications. Then she paints and so does every other woman who has a husband and or kids, we also smoke, drink, shop, curse, eat, and pretend to workout. She also says she has a baby clothing line/jewelry line, but we never seem to see any of the items. Now don't get me wrong everybody has got something going on "in their mind". I mean for God sakes in my mind I have been on Oprah, performed my poetry at the Fox, and have several books, and clothing lines going, so clearly I get it, but at the end of the day those jobs are null and void. I will admit Lisa and her husband exemplify black love in a very good way so with that I am very pleased. It doesn't seem contrived but sincere and from the heart.
Sheree Whitfield
OMG! I don't know where to start with Sheree, so let's start with the obvious which is her "six figures". One of the things that I really hate about this whole housewife show is that they depict the most shallowest version of any kind of woman be it black or white. The first season she constantly expressed that she was going through a divorce trying to get her "six figures" and the sad part is that you have 2 kids and now you are divorced and all you can think about is "six figures"? I swear sometimes these women seem to be smoking crack laced with meth. She would be considered a housewife because she doesn't work. She claims to be a fashion designer but like I said before we are all something in our heads. I do think that Sheree has wonderful taste but I do believe that being a fashion designer is something you must have in you. I think when it comes to dressing, she is 100% on point but when it comes to designing clothes she needs to really reconsider that career. I think Sheree is like a lot of women who uses "things" to make her feel good, and seem more than what she is, but on the inside she is very empty. Things, and addictions are only substitutes for something much bigger that we often desire. Its unfortunate when you need money to validate you. I've learned some of the most happiest people are the people who have absolutely nothing. Those people have learned the true value of prosperity i.e good health, healthy kids, no diseases or abnormalities etc... Don't get me wrong you need money to survive, but as a special person in my life once told me "You want to stay ahead of your money rather than constantly trying to chase it and keep up with it." Staying grounded is hard when you wear shoes that are hollow and have no weight or substance.
Kandi Buress
I really don't have much to say about Kandi because she is probably the best depiction of a "real housewife". However, I still wouldn't consider "a housewife" by societies standards, but she is the most level headed of them all. You can tell she is not caught up in things, and she is just trying to survive and raise her daughter. Good for you Kandi!
Kim Zolciak
I don't know where to begin with this lady. Let's just say that if anyone has "real money" on this show its Kim Zolciak! Now I know Big Poppa maybe helping support her, nevertheless she has the most money. Any woman that can get a new wig everyday that cost $430, has money. Now I will say this about Kim, she is just as messy as the other wives. I don't think they could have picked a better white woman to be on the show. Any other white woman would not have been able to stomach all those women especially NENE. I also think that any other white woman would not have signed up to put her business on blast. One thing about white people and I am talking "wealthy" white people, they are not quick to just hang around random "black people" you have to have some business about yourself even if they are a hot mess, they want the caliber of African American to be up to standards. And just between us chickens (I don't blame them not one bit). As a matter of fact on the right day, I have to stage my dealings with some black people and I am not prejudice just brutally honest.
NeNe Leakes
WOW! I will say that Nene's foolishness is sadly what makes the show and what's even sadder is that her character is the typical persona that America expects all black women to be. America expects black women to be loud, obnoxious, ghetto, catty, messy, wrapped up in a comical nice/nasty bow. She could be so much more as could all of the ladies but I think sometimes in life when you came up with nothing when you finally are afforded some level of normalcy/success you tend to take it "by any means necessary". I think that if Nene continues to get more successful she might end up leaving poor Greg cause he won't fit into her big world. Let's pray she stays humble.
In conclusion...
I think the show is very entertaining, but those shallow, and pretentious characters are not what makes a "real housewife". A real housewife deals with the demands of keeping a house clean cause we can't afford a house keeper (we are the housekeeper). We have to decide whats more urgent today washing clothes/feeding the kids, bathing/brushing our teeth, paying the power bill/getting groceries in the house, cooking/catching my favorite past time show, shopping for a much needed pair of shoes for kids/shopping for a much needed coat for the kids. A real housewife does not get a break we have to take a break or else we might hurt someone. We steal our breaks when the kids are sleeping or at a play date with some other rambunctious toddler. We don't have chefs, be barely cook and the only reason we do cook is for the kids because if it was left up to us we would eat candy bars, ice cream, bowls of cereal, left over breakfast or whatever we can get our hands on. A real housewife knows that her job is thankless and she has long since reconciled with that harsh but real truth. She loves taking care of her family even though she may go kicking and screaming the whole way. At the end of the day when the house is quiet, dishes are scattered in the dishwasher, toys are thrown back in their perspective places, and the kids are nicely tucked in bed that's when the real housewife realizes that her reward comes not from what the world expects of her, but what her kids appreciate her for. To all the wonderful women taking care of your kids and homes do your thing and do it well and know that no one could do your job better than you.
