A Long Time Comin

Well. I've been plottin and plannin this article for some time. I feel bad as I haven't done ANY research on it....which is weird...so it's going to be pretty much based on opinion. This will be my top 5 favorite drummers and a short list of the best of the rest. Sit back, enjoy...and maybe you'll find a new drummer to check out. Feel free to add you're own in the comments!

Evan Miller

This started as a way to boost his ego....he was WAAAAAY too timid behind the set...but it has blossomed into exactly this: He's my favorite freakin drummer! Evan was the drummer for my band STALE and is currently drummer for a band called (until further notice) karmakaze. His style would be best compared to Abe Cunningham from the deftones and he'd be the first to admit that Abe is/was a big influence. Evan has a great ability to innovate, improvise, and astound. One of the reasons why...he's never content! Always looking to improve a part, add a fill, or just rock out....I guarantee Evan will blow your mind!

Jimmy Chamberlin

It is no secret that the Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite band. One of the main reasons is Jimmy Chamberlin's amazing drum ability. Jazz sensibility and in your face rocking....how could I not be into it? He's also a master at jungle drums (see Lucky 13). You can check out Jimmy Chamberlin Complex and Zwan to confirm his greatness! From his own mouth he was influenced by Buddy Rich.Yet again, another great improvisational drummer, with insanely tight fills. Although consistent high hat lifts were not invented by Chamberlin it is probably the most prominent feature of his drum beats. I'm finding it hard to put the words together as to why he's so awesome so just watch the video.

Dave Grohl

Man....Dave Grohl is such a well rounded musician...and I aspire to be like him. He's one of the few "celebrities" (no such thing...we're all people) that I'd ever care to meet. That being said....he again isn't the greatest of technical drummer, but BRUTAL. Intense fills and pounding drumming. Dave Grohl has done a lot of drum work, including for Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, and Probot. I personally can tell a Dave Grohl beat by the kick drum pattern and sound. ALSO, in Nirvana he had a mic on him and did back up vocals. I'm a big fan of drummers doing back ups. One of these days Mr. Grohl, our paths will cross and we will make the single greatest band/cd/song that has EVER EEEEEEEEVVVVVER been recorded!

Travis Barker

He might be one of the sickest drummers to ever walk the planet. Truly. Incredible rolls done with ease, speed, and style.I 've seen blink182 live twice and came away even more impresed with this guy each time. One of the times he did the whole Tommy Lee thing, drum solo while rotating in the air, and it was waaaaaay better than anything Tommy Lee could ever hope to do. You can hear Travis in the following bands: The Aquabats, blink182, BoxCar Racer, +44, and DJ Am and Travis. Watch the video and tell me you aren't impressed.

Todd Trainer

Trainer is the drummer for the band Shellac currently. WOW. What can I say? This dude has some of the tightest drumming I have ever heard. Everything in it's right place. Add to that the sound....we got a winner! I love the panic that seems to seep into some of the songs and I've heard his drumming described as primal....very well put. He beats the living crap out of his drums! Do yourselves a favor....watch the video and find some Shellac of North America.

The Best of the Rest

I understand I haven't used the most technical of terms, hey, I'm not a drummer. I explained as best I could why I liked each of these drummers. I'm hoping that maybe you check out one of these bands from this..if not, that's alright.I am an unapologetic fan of 90's Alt rock....and I know there's tons of drummers that I'm missing. Just because they aren't here doens't mean they aren't good or I dont know them. It just means they aren't one of my favorites. Like I said feel free to add your own in the comments! Here is a few drummers I dig that didn't make the cut.

  • D.J Blake- formerly of Great American Headache
  • Dennis Frog- the Frogs
  • James Howard- Great American Headache, Soltice
  • Abe Cunningham- Deftones

Taylor Hawkins- Foo Fighters

OMG! I did not know you had a band! AWESOME! Your drummer is mad! Your crew sounds fab! I do agree with you on 'D. Grohl' QOTSA are indeed teh shiz! But what about the 'Stokes' drummer Fabrizio Moretti? I would love to join your band, but I am not much for talking, let alone singing. What is your youtube link?
