Does The Right Mentor Matter?

  • Part I

I began to ponder,

--(placing my pointer finger near my temple with a bewildered look on my face)

what makes some individuals more successful?

--(I'm talking about the dudes and dudettes with all the cash flow).

One of the repeated themes

--( similar to your jacked-up CD skipping)

was that most of them had one thing in common and that's the fact that they were blessed

--(divinely endowed with favor from above)

with the right mentor to assist them in whatever they aspired to learn. It was through these relationships that they reached greater heights --(flying like an eagle)

and achieved more than they ever imagined possible by themselves. --(Cause no one's ever done it alone, sorry!)

The word Mentor --(grand poopa)

is defined as:

1) a wise and trusted counselor or teacher.

2) An influential senior sponsor or supporter.

So to have a great mentor is an invaluable gift,

--(more precious than gold)

to anyone aspiring to go beyond mediocrity

--(not set apart or above average; just ordinary).

A great mentor is the promoter of intentional learning,

--(hey Mom, I think I like this) and is one who is willing to share both their successes and failures. They will talk about both themselves

--(but not too much like some people--things that make you go, "hmm..."),

and give their experiences to help build rapport

--(the stuff that makes you want to hug them)

making them "learning leaders." It may be informal

--(wear your jeans, girlfriend!) or formal

--(you better shave, boy!)

in practice, however the mentor's task is to explain, model, and demonstrate

--(not like the tired professor in chemistry class)

while the protégé objective is to observe, question, and explore

--(live up to your title; stand proud!)

The development of the protégé will mature over time

--(yes, you need more than an hour) when it's done correctly.

This allows the protégé to tap into continual learning,

--(uh-huh my friend -- more than once, it's not an ATM),

rather than having any one-time event

--(like your birth)

define their success.

Great mentoring is the product of collaboration

--(you too can be part of a mastermind team)

between the mentor and protégé in the forming of a successful joint venture,

--(togetherness! Don't you love it?!)

Through each party's shared responsibility and learning, there develops a contract

--(no worries-- it's not a blood covenant)

for the purpose and proposal of any given learning agenda. Once you have an understanding of what a great mentor/protégé relationship should offer to one another it's time to venture out and find the mentor that's right for you,

--(now go!-May the force be with you!)

I have 2 very Powerful Mentors I'd like to acknowledge here and I'm grateful for knowing
