The Rise and Fall of JetAmerica
52
America's newest discount airliner came and went without many noticing. JetAmerica which posted $9 fares to 6 locations within the U.S. recently announced that all of those that purchased tickets will be getting refunds, as the company continues to have internal problems. The problems that JetAmerica were having were gate issues and leases, especially in Newark, New Jersey. In addition to Newark, JetAmerica was scheduled to fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; South Bend, IN; Toledo, OH; Lansing, MI; and Orlando/Melbourne, Florida.
JetAmerica remained a mystery even to employees at MSP International Airport. Tickets were being sold on JetAmerica's website before the airline had a gate, an airport lease, and even a sufficient number of airplanes to service the six destinations. Fortunately those who bought tickets will be getting refunds, but this comes a little to late for some who have booked hotels and other non-refundable expenses.
JetAmerica's CEO reports on the airlines website that they do plan on offering low-priced tickets in the near future. Whether or not customers will believe what they see next time around is a different story. It is imperative that you know exactly who your paying, now matter what it is. JetAmerica could have gotten off the ground, no pun intended, if they would have established airport leases, gates, and airplanes, before selling tickets. Another important aspect that they missed was promotion, the only way most people heard of the airline was from bad press regarding the mystery behind the low-cost airline.
When buying airline tickets, stick to trusted airlines. It's not worth it to fly on a mystery airline for cheap, while putting your safety and bank account in jeopardy. If you wanna fly on well-established airlines try out Southwest or Sun Country. Or search for tickets using Expedia and Orbitz. The online site, AirfareWatchdog, is a great tool for finding great deals. If your travels take you to Europe, consider RyanAir to get around the continent. Fares on RyanAir start at $1 one-way. The only catch on this airline is that their are luggage restrictions and no extras on-board such as food and drinks.
The need for having low-cost airlines, especially during tough economic times is highly desired. The difficult part is establishing such airlines that are scrutinized for not promoting their airlines and for having tickets that are too low to sustain the airline. Safety in the air should be first and foremost, the reason why these airlines don't promote themselves on radio, television, magazines, and newspapers is because it costs far too much. The best promotional technique for such airlines is word-of-mouth.
