The Role Of The Gamma Camera In Medical Cameras
54
When it comes to gamma cameras, many people are confused about what they are and what they do. They also tend to be confused about the difference between a gamma camera and other medical camera devices.
One of the keys to understanding what a gamma camera is and what it does is to understand the other camera types that are most commonly used in the medical field. By understanding them you will also be able to appreciate the value of the gamma camera to the medical industry and human kind in the abilities that it has.
One of the main cameras that we all know is the X-Ray machine. Many of us have even had an X-Ray done on us at some time or another. The X-Ray machine takes a still picture. It primarily is used to see bones and joints, though it can get pictures of almost anything inside of you. The X-Ray machine, like a picture of your family on vacation, is a still picture. It is taken, then developed and taken to the doctor for analysis.
Another common form of picture taking of your internal parts is the MRI machine. The MRI is like a full body scan machine that you are put into. You are required to hold still for a lengthy time while the machine takes pictures and video of your body. However, while this is a very good and comprehensive method, it is also an expensive one.
The gamma camera then is able to take live video of your internal parts so that a doctor may watch as he asks you do certain things. In other words, they can watch the parts function so that they may be able to determine what is going on by observing the body part in action.
This is the equivalent of having a live TV show versus having pictures to look at. It is incredibly helpful to a doctor to make sure that he understands what the problem is so that he can help in getting it fixed or dealt with.
For medical professionals, anytime that they can get better information quicker, they are all for it. It is not easy to be a doctor and have the pressure of people’s lives depending on you all of the time. Honestly, there are times that it is a guess for them as well to know what is wrong with you. Certainly their guess is far more educated and not a guess in the sense of the word that we might be guessing, but nonetheless, it is a guess and sometimes it is the wrong.
This is the reason a gamma camera is so valuable to them. It allows them similar images of a patient that an MRI might give them but it is a lot less expensive. They can also now use the gamma cameras in their office instead of scheduling a hospital appointment time for the patient to go in to get it done.
Another reason that doctors like the gamma camera is because of the constant innovation with it. It is now portable with a handheld device that contains the gamma camera. This gives them significant flexibility with where and how they use it as well as how quickly they can treat patients.
There have been a lot of advancements in the health care over the last century. It is amazing to think of where the care was 100 years ago and where it is today. Even with that said, it is overwhelming to think about where it could be another 100 years from now.
Technology plays a big role in the improvement of health care. As technology improves and makes more things possible from a technical stand point, the medical professionals are able to learn more and more about the human body and how it works.
If you stop to think for a minute, the type of treatments that are used have changed significantly and some have even reversed completely from what used to be the accepted treatment. The advancement in knowledge of medical field has also impacted the criminal justice system to. With the discovery of DNA and how that works, people are able to be positively identified as the right person who committed some horrific crimes. In some cases, investigators had enough foresight to gather things from the crime scene that seemed useless at the time, but have been used now to gain DNA prove and convict someone who otherwise would have gotten away with the horrible crimes.
We have all been affected in one way or another by someone who has had cancer. Cancer is an ugly disease that has taken the lives of many and for which we still do not really have a cure. There are treatments and many can survive cancer if it is a less aggressive one. The advancement in the gamma camera has helped in the battle against cancer.
Breast cancer is one of those most notable in which the gamma camera has helped. Unlike the traditional mammogram using a mammography machine, the gamma camera is a comfortable way to get the breast screening done which can help bring those in that have been deterred by the uncomfortable instrument used in diagnosing any problems in the breast. Another factor that has helped the gamma camera become a great device for use in doing breast screenings is the fact that they can pick up a much smaller piece of cancer than the traditional machine can. This means that it can be caught a lot earlier and treated sooner. This, of course, means that it can be a life saver for the woman who is found to have breast cancer.
Medical innovation continues on today and the next instrument that will help aid doctors in discovering more and more things about the human body is on the way. There will likely come a day when cancer is something that doctors can successfully treat every time. When that day comes, there will be a lot of happy people that it does not have to be as painful or life ending as some cancers are today.
