The Rumor of the "13th Floor Haunted House" - The Urban Legend of the Scariest Haunted House Ever
91You may have been speaking with your friends about the haunted houses and haunted hayrides you plan to visit this October when someone mentioned the 13th Floor Haunted House. This urban legend is said to be the world's scariest haunted house. Is the 13 story haunted house real or just a rumor?
Common factors in the rumor of the 13th floor haunted house include, of course, multiple levels of terror, increasingly violent or dangerous passages as customers come closer to completion, and the stipulation that anyone who reaches the thirteenth floor of the haunted house will receive a refund of their ticket. Naturally, no one has ever been able to brave this monstrously terrifying haunted house.

Does the 13th Floor Haunted House Exist?
Short answer: no. For all intents and purposes, this is entirely an urban myth. Perpetuated mainly by the idea that somewhere, there's an extreme haunted house out there that even the bravest have been unable to conquer. As with many urban legends, the tale of the 13 story haunted house features a few regularly reoccurring variables. Those brave enough to take on the haunted house often have to deal with gross-out challenges like holding parts of a cadaver, eating or touching bugs, and walking through rooms full of snakes.
Although the story usually involves a 13 story haunted houses, not every version includes this typically "spooky" number. However, almost all versions of the urban legend include the promise of a free visit for anyone brave enough to make it through. Naturally, no one has ever been able to make it all the way through. Of course, you're totally brave enough to make it, right?
Sadly, no such haunted house exists. It would be a nightmare for insurers and finding event space for 13 stories of haunted house is a bit difficult. There are plenty of great haunted houses all over America, however. Just none that have customers risking life and limb just to earn a free ride.

But my friend told me the 13 Story Haunted House is Totally Real!
Your friend is mistaken, confused, or playing you. There have been some haunted houses that have played on the rumor, but none that are actually the real deal. You might occasionally see haunted houses or haunted tours offering a ticket refund to anyone brave enough to make it all the way through. These events usually feature confusing mazes with "quitters" exits conveniently placed so anyone frustrated with the near-impossible labyrinth can easily leave and go home without their refund.
The fires stoking the 13th Floor Haunted House rumors were only increased when a Philadelphia morning radio show created an elaborate Halloween prank based off the myths surrounding impassible 13 floor haunted houses. Featuring a DJ "really going through" this secret haunted house, he played up all the rumors of gross stunts and terrifying events to the hilt. While this was an utterly lie, Philly residents do have the best haunted house in the nation to keep them company: the Eastern State Penitentiary's Terror Behind the Walls is easily one of the scariest haunted houses ever.

Great hub - very interesting and fun to read!
yes there is a 13th floor haunted house, but it is only one flood thats y its the 13th not the thirteen. It is located in colorado, and i went there last nite. dont believe me??? getscared.com
This was a very entertaining hub. Too bad the 13th floor haunted house doesn't really exist. It would have been a real scare-fest to visit on Halloween.
Keep the hubs coming! I'll be back for more.
what is really trippy is the fact that old hotels used to disregard the 13th floor and go from 12th to 14th. But in actuality the 14th floor would still be the 13th floor and some of those old hotels (if still standing) may be haunted, thus making it kind of a "13th floor haunted house"...but I think thats the closest thing to getting to one as we're gonna get. GOOD HUB!
it looks scary.
wohhh..never heard this before so it is really interesting to know and unravel the truth behind this haunted house..however based from your hub-it is just a rumor so i'll keep it that way so i won't be scared.. thanks for this halloween treat. :)
All these rumors originate from a haunted house called 13 Stories. It apparently gives the illusion that you're going up different levels but you're really not, and they haunted house itself doesn't give much information. People claiming to be employees comment on hubs like this and give a vauge explanation of what really goes on an false myths. I've never been but the website says they MIGHT have live rats, and their ACTORS will not touch you but their MONSTERS will.. whatever that means. They won't throw you out of a window or give you a refund for making it all the way through, but it's supposed to be pretty damn scary either way.
Just search "13 Stories haunted house" on google.. you'll get all the same answers I did.
Hah that's why there's no 13th floor in highrises! Spooooky. Nice halloween story.
Some other dude named MR Voodoo wrote a hub about this today too....just so you know.
I'm sure he just heard about it too, haha. I've been getting good traffic, I'm not worried. Thanks for looking out though.
Great hub but I really have no interest in actually trying out even the kiddie versions of haunted houses (chicken me!). They do look interesting though!
Great hub Len!
I love haunted houses and if there really was such a thing, I would probably try and find it myself. Keep up the good work!
Scare House looks great, they just do not have stuff like this in Ireland, shame. Great Hub, urban myths are always interesting.
I living in Northern Colorado, know of the 13th floor. It is a Famous Haunted House in Denver. Every 113th person to make it to the "top floor" Gets their money back. It is a story that did originate from a hotel in the 1800's that was rumored to be haunted, which eventually led it to it's vacancy and yet remained for years and years to come, eventually turning into an older apartment complex. I'll be hopefully going in the next few weeks. But I can assure you it is real and is called "The 13th floor" In this haunted house, there are live animals, insects, and people who will chase you around, also sometimes depending on which year, you're required to sign a waver. The waver is there so you won't be sued for the Actors bumping into you, fun isn't it? Every friend of mine who has gone say it is by far the scariest experience they have had in a haunted house. As for the amount of floors, it only is on one level, and takes a while to get through. They make you go through elevators which move giving the illusion it moves. Also, it is dangerous, people have gotten hurt going to this haunted house. There is a set path, paying customers should follow, if they wander off the path, they have fallen down elevator shafts, gotten "lost", passed out, etc... Anyways, hopes this helps with the fact or fiction idea of the 13th floor.
huhu
Urban Myths have a number of great stories ...might be available in the current era ....but over a great interesting hub you have.
I never heard of it before today - but hear of lots of urban legends. If it ever comes to town I will be sure to see the "13th floor haunted house".
Happy Halloween.
J. Sapp
Enjoyed it, waiting for more
Yeah, I went to a haunted house called 13 stories hoping it was this one, but i was greatly disappointed. It lasted like 20 minutes at best and I was laughing all the way through because I was expecting so much better. Oh well, that sucks that the house that would be the most fun doesn't really exist.
that is totally real
Im so bummed... I wanted it to be real...please dont tell me santa isnt real!!!!
If this is so truly and widely accepted, then why does the calendar still retains number "13" ? The why the numbers include "13" in it ? Is it really believed everywhere or just a belief ?

Well I think its a shame, every town should have a 13th floor house, especially at Halloween. Think of the money that could be made as everyone flocked to scare themselves senseless. Oh well another lost opportunity, still I guess some entrepreneur will read this and think I really need to create a 13th floor scary house and the next thing you know it will be real.
