The Sages Among Us
66
What does wisdom look like?
Can we recognize it when someone gives us the best advice we might ever get... or will we unknowingly dismiss it? The generally accepted image of wisdom is the elderly, or the owl. Is the owl wise, or does he just look like he would be? Was Gandhi wise, or just a loving, non-violent soul? I've heard bits of incredible wisdom come from just about everyone I know. It's there, if you listen.
One of the best bits of advice ever given to me was from a dear friend, ten years my elder. It was said in passing, but I heard it. I was only nineteen years old, but I recognized it for what it was, and I followed it. I believe it changed my life.
"Read everything you get your hands on."
But, how do we know when we've just been given a bit of wisdom? Can we recognize good advice when it's given to us? Not always. Sometimes we're too young. Sometimes we just fail to listen, or are incapable of listening. Delivery plays an important part, too. Is everything an elder tells you wise? Of course not. Growing old does not automatically make one smart, but it does warrant a certain degree of respect. We Americans, all too often, have forgotten that simple rule.
I believe wisdom comes mostly from experience: Been there, done that, know better. But I've heard profound statements come from individuals who are far from elderly. So, go figure...
Below are some of my favorite quotes and bits of advice. There are many more which are not included here. To quote them all would take a series of hubs bigger than I want to do, but I will be adding to this hub, as I come across bits of wisdom... here and there.

Well spoken, M'Lady. Thank you for stopping by.
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom."
Martin Luther King Jnr.
CJ.
I do understand that quote! It just goes to prove that fighting is inherent in some people's minds-how did it get there-----Religion and the thought of I am better than you. When, oh When is the people of the world going to understand that it isn't always best to kill first then ask questions?
Great wisdom here. Thanks for sharing this Hub. For me I love the Serenity Prayer. Please see how I try to help others in new ways. Sincerely: Gary Eby, author and therapist.
The most effective piece of wisdom I ever got, came from my best friend when I was in High School (probably gotten from his old man), and still serves me to this day:
There is always a reason not to do something, so stop thinking and just get it done.
Great hub. Love the Homer Simpson quote. Oscare Wilde and Groucho never fail to deliever either.
Deep really deep! Super hub C.W. Your hub just goes to show that wisdom can be found not just in the obvious places like in the words of Mother Theresa, Ghandi etc but anywhere... in the lyrics of todays songs, George Carlin and Groucho Marx ...
Great thinking hub regards Zsuzsy
Good one, CJ- So many things I see us doing... we seem to be blindly propelling ourselves toward on our doom. The wildebeasts following each other over the cliff, because everybody else is doing it.
Lady- I've been wondering that same thing for many years: Will we evolve before we kill ourselves?
QL- Helping others, and new ways. Both seem to be good things.
Shades- Good quote, and ya, probably got it from his old... who got it from his. Sounds very much like something my late grandfather would have said. Weird to quote Homer Simpson, I know, but it was such a great quote - on several levels - that I couldn't resist. And Groucho's wisdom was way under-rated... a fact I believe he relished.
CW, your hub and the quote CJ posted inspired me to do a new hub.
Thank you, Zsuzsy. "Wisdom, it would seem, is not limited to the wise." ---Constant Walker, 2008. Couldn't reaist! Seriously, there were lots of very intelligent lines from things I've read right here on HP, but there just isn't the room to include them all - or to try to pick which were better, you know?.
Apparently, we are quite the group of Fart Smellers!
Thank you, Lady- Quite the ego-builder to be someone's inspiration! I may have to change my HP avator to the Snowy Owl image in this hub... "The HubPages Sage."
I just can't resist being a smart-ass, can I? I think there's something wrong with me...
LOL
And you're laughing... very noble of you.. Here I am, suffering from terminal smartassness (just made that up!), and you're laughing!
{{ belief is the death of intelligence. }} Exactly. Bertrand Russell was saying this nearly a hundred years ago. I hubbed about this in 'Freedom from Belief'
Para- Amazing sentence, isn't it? CJStone turned me on to it. People were paying attention, even 100 years ago, weren't they? Do you think their numbers have increased... or diminished?
CW, yes LOL LOL Smartasses can be fun too ya know!
Paraglider, I will have to read that one. I wrote On The Head Of A Pin for something in this hub that sparked my inspiration!
Lady- I'm heading over there to read that one. I already like the title.
And don't think that bit of sneaky promotion you just did slipped my notice... ;-)
CW, these are great. My favorites from these are the ones by Martin Luther King Jr. the Irish toast to the deceased, and Ghandi. Thanks for sharing these.
Well, I am as guilty as Paraglider! LOL life is beautiful isn't it! All the colorful (and I don't mean colr of skin) people wa have here to enjoy!
You're very welcome, Gwendy. There are so many good quotes and pieces of advice... this hub will probably continue to grow.
Truly, Lady. The diversity on HP alone is impressive. Kind of a micro-model for the whole world.
Well as my highschool home ec teach told me....you don't have to follow the flock to your death--be yourself.
That was a very wise woman. I picked up that mentality from hippies in my teenage years, and have lived it ever since. I LIKE being me - complete with all the flaws, differences and idiosyncracies.
Ive Had a perfectly good evenig, but this wasn't it...i love that,
CFlynn- I know, gotta love Groucho! Thanks for reading.
Life would be very dull indeed without Groucho and Oscar Wilde and Lucille Ball! Great compilation CW. And have you noticed how kids often say the darnedest things? :)
"Don't worry what other people say; they don't know the real you." From a friend in middle school.
Speaking of kids, my six year old tonight asked if we still have wars (she was watching a movie.) I told her yes, they are going on right now. She shook her head in disgust, "just one side has say we quit."
Out of the mouth of babes.
Feline- Cool image, and thank you. I have, and they do. I'd just gotten an email from a cousin with a bunch of quotes from kids, and was going Alright, perfect timing! but none of them were any good.
KT-I think I've heard that somewhere before, TV maybe, anyway it's a good one. Thanks for reading.
Patricia- Thanks for sharing that. If only someone would listen to those "babes," eh?
love the collection. it reveals the kind of "profound" humor you have. thanks constant walker. this made me smile and reflect and agree. Godbless;)
I saw this in hubtivity "The Sages Among Us" and didn't want to pass it by. I like this: I've heard bits of incredible wisdom come from just about everyone I know. It's there, if you listen." I also love this quote: The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. ---"Moulin Rouge"
Thank you and I hope you have room for a new fan!
Wow, Dazzee! Could I ever ask for for a better reaction? Thank you very much... and bless YOU.
Thank you, Dottie. That's very flattering. I love the Moulin Rouge quote, too. And yes, of course, there is always room!
What a neat hub, CW! Ecclectic selection of quotes -- lots of variations on a theme. A bit miffed you neglected to include any Mae West, but that's ok:-).
Personally, I am hoping that age equates in some measure with increasing wisdom. I mean, the looks are going -- something's gotta be coming in to take their place, right?
I'm with you, MM. Counting big time on becoming sage-like in my old age. And if that doesn't happen, to hell with it! ...I'll just enjoy myself, instead.
RE: Mae West, I haven't heard anything from her that struck me, you know? Any suggestions?
I agree the "classic" Mae West lines are straight up innuendo. Here are a few that I do like, tho!
• It isn't what I do, but how I do it. It isn't what I say, but how I say it, and how I look when I do it and say it.
• I'll try anything once, twice if I like it, three times to make sure.
• When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never tried before.
Thanks, MM! I love the 2nd and 3rd, and am adding them to the hub. The first one, I've heard other variations on. But the 2nd and 3rd sound like things I would easily have said...
Wow, I might have been a floozy-type movie star in a previous life!
Too funny. A floozy movie star. Here's one quote that I have a hard time picturing coming from you (in your current incarnation, at least): Cultivate your curves -- they may be dangerous but they won't be avoided.
I was just comparing your avatar photo with the pic of the elder face of wisdom. The expression's already there. All you need is a long white beard and you're a dead ringer!
Good one, CW! It is beneficial to read the wise quotes every so often to remind ourselves of what is really important, and to take our minds off life's everyday hassles. I'm with Abe: Simple, but profound. Wisdom isn't complicated. Thanks!
"Read everything you get your hands on". YES!
Great hub as usual, CW. I live by the Either Or Theory myself: Either a thing will happen or it won't - the trick is to be prepared for both outcomes.
MM-Really? I don't see it. Maybe in a few years... Last week, someone said in a comment I bore an "uncanny resemblance" to William Mapother - Ethan in "Lost." That one, I can actually see.
Christoph- Thank you, and I love that: "Wisdom isn't complicated."
Thanks, Jama- I like the Either Or Theory, That's really all you can do, eh? Roll With It, Make the Best of it, etc.
Bookmarking this one. I needed it today. Many thanks!
Fabulous hub, and some fantastic quotes. I'll be sharing this hub with everyone!
Thank you, Marian- I hope it helps!
Thank you, too, Leisa. That's great!
Free- Thank YOU.
"When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad. That's my religion". ---Abraham Lincoln
Great quote but my only question with that is whether the Psychologically deviant behaviour of certain individuals like Pathological Killers/Child Molestors has the same level of conscious thinking/feeling ability. Do those people feel bad about their actions or they feel good about committing these bad acts?
Good, and deep, questions, Country (I love those!)- And from what I've heard and learned (I wrote a paper on sociopathic behavior while at Edison Tech) the answers to your questions are, No, and Yes. These are mentally unbalanced indiviuals, and very much need to remain OUT of society and under lock & key.
They are believe to be "beyond help."
So to understand your answers to my questions
Do they have a thinking/feeling ability --- Did you say NO?
Do they feel bad about their actions - Yes
or
Do they feel good about their bad actions - Yes
I always suspected you are highly educated (By any chance do you have a Doctorate in Psychology?)
Well I certainly hope nobody is ever "beyond help". If there are some psychological disturbances from past experiences then some form of therapy can hopefully make a difference.
Close, Country: "Do they feel bad about their actions?" No
"Do they feel good about committing these bad acts?" Yes
These people have problems which we are unable to, so far, correct. Some of it is due to "nurture" - whether none at all or bad - and some is due to nature. Something very wrong in their brains: A complete apathy for the feelings of other creatures, human or animal.
Thank you for the "highly educated" comment! I wish I could say that I was, but I'm not... not formally, anyway. And certainly no Doctorate in Psychology. I am mostly self-educated. I read, I listen, I learn, I pay attention. And... I'm experienced - which is a delicate way of saying "old." If I hadn't picked up a few things in 51 years, something would be very wrong, eh?
A very good collection of quotes, my friend. My favorite quote is:
"I can learn nothing more, once I think I know enough"
Unfortunately, I can't remember where I heard this from.
*smiles*
Terence- Thanks for reading. I like that one, too. It's very close to one I heard an elderly country/western guitarist say once (and then promptly stole it for my own!), "The only thing I know for sure... is that I don't know shit."
HI Constant walker, I am glad I stumbled on this very beautiful hub! I love the quotes you've chosen for me to reflect and be reminded upon. :) I shall be bookmarking this one. Hmmm I wonder how you will look like with a long white beard like the one you posted above? :) LOL
Old! Ha-ha. But you never know, I may grow to like the look. Thanks for reading, Ripple, and for bookmarking. I'm flattered!
Oh No!! I like the present look (beard is weird)..hehe
Btw are you kidding me or serious about that 51 years assertion. You look like early 30's at the max or the picture taken was a while ago.
Constant Walker, old? how about dignified? full of wisdom? Hahahha Dumbledore look alike hehehe Well, bearded or not, underneath all those whity stuff is still you. To the wisdom of the sages... cheers! :)
I second that ripple. Constant is certainly a wise sage giving us his wisdom in answering our queries.
One line to describe him would be : He is a nice device to give wise advice.
Country- Ya, I'm serious. 51. The picture was taken last year... almost two years ago. As soon as I get a digital camera, I'll post a more recent one.
Ripple- I'll toast to that!
Very poetic, Country. I certainly wouldn't call me wise, maybe learn-ed in some areas... maybe. But, everyone is wise in certain areas...
Iam sure you will get a great deal on thanksgiving. You might want to check the reviews before you decide to buy from cnet.com
Yes we can learn from everything around us including trees, birds, rivers, sky.. (as per my grandpa)...LOL
Country- You talkin' to me? If so, you lost me. What am I buying from cnet.com?
Hi CW, great hub! Wisdom looks like that old guy with a beard. LOL! No, wisdom is what you see in yourself when you look in the mirror after a really hard period in your life. That. I firmly believe. :)
CW - I was responding to the previous comment "As soon as I get a digital camera"..hehe
Steph- That is a GREAT quote! Can I use it, please? And the "old guy" one was funny...
Country, Oooh! Actually I saw one at Wal-Mart I wouldn't mind having. I'd REALLY like to find a digi camera with all the features of film cameras, you know, zoom lenses, filters, etc. Digital cameras are very convenient but still really limited as far as creative photography.
Whether we recognize a sage or sage advice is certainly determined by our own sagelyness. Things take on meaning as we are ready for that meaning. I believe there has to be at least an inkling of awakening before we sttart to realize or hear the importance of some advice. but once we are on that path we begin to look for it and are more apt to hear it.
Fortunately for myself and I imagine this is common I remember lessons that I did not understand or even know were lessons at the time but later in life they took on great meaning. So lucky for me they were sitting there in my head waiting.
CNET.com is not for buying it is for product reviews. Just wait till thanksgiving and checkout these online deals at deals2buy.com
Shun- Some very "sagely" observations. You've been contemplating! Thanks for reading.
Country- I just may do that. Thanks for the tip.
I am soooo honored to be among the sages here! And fortunately, I do not have a beard. :)
That's OK... Neither do I. Too much American Indian to even go for the scruffy look...
Heavy sigh!
Very well done. Thank you.
Thank you for reading, Candice. Glad you liked it!
CW, no way are you 51! I am shocked. you don't look a day over 30ish. BTW, you were saying above about digital cameras and lenses etc. I bought a Nikon D70, and love it. you can do so much with it.
Thanks for the tip, Gwendy, and for the "30ish" comment. Actually, that's the typical age-range people usually assume. I still get carded! Not as often lately, but still. It's incredibly flattering... unless I don't have my wallet with me. Then it SUCKS!
I'll definitely check out the Nikon D70.
LOL, I wish I still got carded, it's been a long time since that has happened to me.
You look about the same age I look... if that. Do you dress older? For me, it's assured I'll be carded if I'm wearing shades and a ball cap - which I almost always am!
CW, thanks. maybe, I do dress older, or maybe I dress to young and that makes me look older. I have always looked aolder than I am though. Yeah, I could see how you would get craded wearing a ball cap and shades.
And I'm betting you'd look younger, or maybe "less formal" is what I'm going for, in a regular-type photo. The one you're using is a Head Shot, or something ike that, right?
Every female in my family (and many of the males) have one of those.
Don't judge us... we're from SoCal...
It is actually one of those glamour shot things, me and a friend decided to go get them done one day. it was fun.
Roflmao, that's funny. I have often wondered if people from California have those glamorous head shots on their drivers license.
Ya, Glamour Shots. Same deal.
I don't know about that for sure, but I DO know that some places let you bring in your own photo - but it's got to be the right size. So, I wouldn't doubt it for a second.
LOL. I am from California and I can assure you both, G-mom and CW, that I do NOT have a Glamour shot on my drivers licence. Looks more like a mug shot (bleary eyed deer in the headlights).
Fun game for tonight (what happened to the group shower over at CR's that was just getting started when I had to leave about 11 this am Pacific time)? Anyway, we can play guess the Hubber's real age. I am with G-mom. I would never have put you at 51 CW. But since you live in Oregon, are you interested in meeting my friend Jody who lives in Oregon? SHe's based out of Portland but travels all over.
G-mom, I honestly can't picture you wearing anything but that strapless flouncy dress -- but with shit-kicking boots. And possibly some of those long gloves that have no fingers....
MM, I think the party is on hold until CR gets the water heater fixed. Hope you still have your soap on a rope. I am sad to disappoint you, but it is hard to take care of children and do housework in a dress like that. I wear the mommy uniform mostly. T-shirt, capri pants and flip flops or tennis shoes. I am pretty sure I would make a good candidate for that what not to wear show.
OMG!! Now THERE"S a vision!! Imagine getting a bunch of us nominated all together and going on What Not to Wear. Would that be a HOOT or what!!!??? LOL. Can you picture Shades in the 360 mirror??? Or Nick doing Misty's hair?? ROFLMAO
MM, thank you, I'm flattered, I really am, but not right now. I can picture Gwendy in a wife-beater, tight knee-length jeans and checkered high-top converse. ;-)
OMG Gwendy! I SWEAR I had not read you last comment before writing the above. Talk about a good guess!!!
MM- My cousin the new snob (who will buy an ugly article of clothing because it is expensive) would tell you that show is ABOUT me. I just laugh.
PS: Betcha my ID pic is uglier than yours!
I must confess I can be ready for work in 15 minutes in the morning (I like to sleep more than I care to primp)...so I'm sure I'd fall into the fashion disaster category.
I figured out CW's age only because I counted on my fingers one day and made a mental note that he's the same age as my brother...err...older brother. /duck
Ha-ha. Didn't I put my age on my profile page... sorta?
Sort of...still had to do some math :P
Great hub, CW. Love the Oscar Wilde quote, "I didn't recognize you. I've changed a lot." I think that's my fav.
There were others there that I thought were great, as well but it seemed silly to rewrite your hub and hog the comment section. :)
Ha-ha, Thanks Shirley. That was one of my faves, too. If I had to pick my favorite, off the top of head, it would probably be the one from "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." But, if I read through them I'd be going "no wait, THIS is my favorite. No, THAT one."
Constant--I thought I found my favorite quote right at the beginning...sorry, I love them all! Are you a sage?
Love these quotes. I have to agree with Shades - Oscar Wilde and Groucho quotes are always good.
I've always liked that Wilde quote: "I didn't recognize you. I've changed a lot"
I think that Mother Teresa's words were always sage. She had a lot of clarity.
Hi CW,
I wonder why I almost walked over this hub. I absolutely fall for it. Thanks. PS. Oscar Wilde always makes me laugh, then pause and sober up.
K@ri thank you. I'm a Sage-wanna-be.
-Shirley thanks. To me, Groucho was was brilliant... in a completely ridiculous way. Which, in itself, was brilliant.
-Well said, Benson. I can't build on that one.
The amount of work you put into this hub is fabulous! I don't understand why it's score isn't a 100. Great work.
Thank you, RKH. I was higher shortly after I published it, but then scores naturally go down.

I like this hub. Wisdom is not about religion either. It's about living life to the fullest and then honoring it.
