I love all the hype out there on the net today about MLM and network marketing.  I'm sure you have seen some of the ads that state, "Earn up to 10K per day working from home", "Make thousands daily online with E-bay", and "Get Rich Overnight".  I am actually a victim to running some of these ads myself.  Just this evening I was going over one of my downlines that I have built over the past few months that has hundreds of people in it, and noticed something very interesting, most everyone in my downline had only recruited 1, 2, none, or maybe at the very most a handful of distributors.  What does that tell you?  Well it tells me that most everyone in MLM is either part-time, no time, or just simply tried it and quit.  Do I take it personally that no one in my group except for 1 or 2 people not counting myself were able to recruit large numbers of people?  Of course not.  This is the way MLM works, it always has and I believe it always will.  One of my favorite mentor's on MLM Bob Schmidt who made millions in MLM would say 2 things to those starting out in MLM, "It's better to move too slow than too fast", and he would say, "If each of you could find just 1 top producer every 12 months, you could become wealthy over time".  What that led me to believe was that it is not my responsibility to develop leaders, but to find them.  I have recruited people who I thought were going to be dynamite and after 3 weeks they were onto something else.  I have recruited people who have stayed with me for many weeks or months and get it.

So why all of the hype?  The hype is to get people excited.  But what I believe is the hype gets people to quit before they get started.  Let me give you an example, if I am an employer and I hire you to work for me and tell you that you are going to earn $10K your first month and you only earn $2K or less your first month, what is going to happen?  That person is probably going to quit.  So here is what I recommend to anyone working with their downline, only really work with those people that put their hand up, don't tell anyone they are going to make a ridiculous amount of money in their first 30, 60, or 90 days.  MLM is a longterm deal, most of the successful people I know in MLM have been in it for years, months, or decades.  Don't get sucked into all the hype.  My great grandmother had a saying that I would like to share with you and it is so simple, but so wise, "By the inch its a sinch, By the yard it's too hard".

If your new to MLM here is my advice, so you don't go through some of the pain I have and get sucked into the hype.  This advice could also make the difference whether you retire wealthy one day or join the 98% who retire broke

• Start out part-time (2, 3, 4 hours per day)
• Read Personal Development Books
• Don't believe all the hype, most of it is Garbage (This is a long term deal)
• Don't quit (99.9% quit before anything starts to happen) Most important..... 
• Don't commit a few months, but a few years to this business
• Don't chase people who don't put their hand up
• Only spend time sharing your opportunity or products with those who seem receptive
• Start marketing yourself as an expert on the subject of MLM (blogging, video blogging, etc...)
• Work on yourself first, than work on your business

And the list goes on.  I could probably come up with a hundred other tips, but I can't.  So here is the summary to the above.  Most of the Hype on MLM is garbage, don't commit to 30 or 60 days, but 2 or 3 years.  Understand that 95% of the people that do MLM are part-time and are doing this business alongside another deal.  And most importantly in the few hours a day you put in to this business have fun.  When I am not having fun, I get up out of my desk and go do something else.  Besides, if your having fun recruiting and training will be effortless.  Enthusiasm is contagious.
